Zach Britton May Be Converted Back To A Starter When Healthy

A couple days ago we learned of the devastating news that Zach Britton ruptured his Achilles, which will sideline him until around June. Britton entered the offseason as a potential big trade chip, despite the Orioles backing out of a trade with the Astros before the 2017 deadline.

But now the Orioles are stuck with Britton at least until he’s healthy. And it appears that they don’t plan on trading him, but rather Roch Kubatko Of MASN Sports is reporting the O’s have had talks with Britton about converting him into a starter once again.

TERRIBLE idea in my opinion. Although the Orioles have three rotation spots to fill by March, and they don’t seem eager to spend any money to fill them, Zach Britton has held down the back end of the bullpen for several years now, which has been one of the only spots on the Orioles team that has been consistently dominant, and although Britton is a different pitcher now, he failed as a starter early in his career.

Britton’s heath also has to be taken into consideration. He’s been hurt often recently, and having him start games may test his durability too much.

My ideal situation for Zach Britton would be to have him get healthy, prove that he can return to being an elite closer, and then trade him away when the Orioles season is inevitably over by August.

Hard pass on Britton being a starter.
