You Can Bid On Jeffrey Maier’s Glove From The 1996 ALCS

Jeffrey Maier’s black Mizuno glove that he used to pull Derek Jeter’s fly ball into the seats during Game 1 of the 1996 ALCS is up for auction. The auction is running from now till Sunday, and as of this writing, the top bid is $13,000. You can bid on the glove here, and if you’re a glutton for punishment, you can watch the infamous play below.

God, I fucking hate Jeffrey Maier. That isn’t hyperbole either, I legitimately despise him. I know that it happened almost 20 years ago, the Orioles lost the series in five games anyway, and he was just a 12-year-old kid trying to catch a baseball. I should be able to get over this incident, but I just can’t shake my hatred of that cheating cocksucker. Every time I watch that play, it still fires me up. How Richie Garcia managed to blow that call is absolutely mind-boggling. The blind asshole was in perfect position, and Tony Tarasco was camped right under it. It should’ve been an automatic out, or worse case scenario, a ground rule double. But nope, it’s ruled a home run, the game’s tied, the Yankees win the game and the series, and Maier ends up becoming a beloved New York celebrity. Such complete and utter horseshit.

Because time hasn’t been able to heal my wounds from this disaster, I’m thinking watching his glove get destroyed might be my only hope. The Orioles obviously have some money lying around from their dormant offseason, so I’m thinking they should buy the glove and include it in their Opening Day ceremonies. They could set it ablaze in right field and have Tarasco piss on the ashes. I think that would be a fitting way to finally put this tragedy to bed, but I’m open to any and all suggestions. So let me have ’em O’s fans, what would you like to see happen to Maier’s glove?
