WTF. O’s Drop First Two Of Road Trip To Crappy Rays

The Run Down

The Birds wasted another great pitching performance in Saturday’s ass-clenching loss to the lowly Tampa Bay Rays.  Friday, the Birds squandered six scoreless innings from the left arm of Wei-Yin Chen.  Saturday, it was a five hit, seven strikeout performance over seven innings by fireballer Kevin Gausman that went the way of the compost heap.  Gausman’s turn in the rotation wasn’t perfect, he did walk four batters, but he only allowed two earned runs, and in a pennant race, that should be enough. But the bats were again cold for the O’s and instead of a win that would have evened the series, the Birds were handed their second straight loss, 3-2. (And it didn’t help that Rays’ starter Drew Smyly was lights out, allowing just four hits and one run over six frames.)

And to make matters worse and pitching ironic, the game ended on a walk-off passed ball off of the glove of Nick Hundley. That’s not good….

What’s even worse  than that is how the winning run managed to get around the bases.  The run was Yunel Escobar.  He reached on an error by Ryan Flaherty.  He was then moved to second by a sac bunt.  He then advance to third on a  fly ball to center.  Then came an intentional walk and then, the passed ball.  That’s right, the Rays didn’t need to record a hit to score a run.  Sorry Birds, but that’s pathetic.

But here’s the worst part that’s worse than that.  Because this winning thing is relatively new for us Orioles fans, losing two in a row to fucking Tampa feels like the wagon is stuck in the mud because the wheels have already done fallen off.  It’s ridiculous to feel that way, of course, since the O’s are 8.5 games up with only 21 left to play, but it’s the way any losing streak feels at this point.  I really need the bats to come alive tomorrow for a win, it will restore my fragile baseball sanity.

Other Game Notes

Nick Hundley may feel a little like the goat tonight because of the passed ball in the ninth, but he did have two hits in the game.  If everyone else would have had just one damn hit the passed ball wouldn’t have mattered.

Chris Davis went two for four with a home run.  He has hit safely in 7 of his last 9 ballgames.  He also now has 26 home runs and 72 RBIs, which is crazy for a dude batting .196.

JJ Hardy sat out with back spasms.  He should return Sunday.

Steve Pearce returned to the lineup and went 0-2 with two walks.

Next Up For The Birds

Norris (12-8) vs Hellickson (1-3)

Need one here.  Magic Number is 14.

Let’s Go O’s!
