We’ve Clinched, But It Still Makes Me Angry. O’s Blanked 5-0 By Pineda, Yanks Pen.

The Run Down

As everyone knows, the Orioles have won the American League East.  As of close of business tonight, the O’s had clinched at least the number two seed for the American League playoffs.  (Detroit lost, and that sealed that up.)  The Birds can still catch the Angels for the number one seed, but Buck seems content to let his players get healthy and make sure that his pitchers are getting the right amount of rest and work.  I am, of course, perfectly fine with that. Buck knows his team, and every Orioles’ fan wants every Bird properly rested and healthy for the O’s playoff run.

But losing to the Yankees sucks donkey balls, even with the division clinched.  It’s especially disheartening to lose like the O’s did tonight, the Birds were smothered by Michael Pineda and his bullpen cronies.  To give credit where credit is due, Pineda was dealing for 7.1 innings, striking out eight and walking one.  The New York bullpen followed by allowing just one more base runner on the night.  Losing 5-0 is always lame, getting shut out while only producing only three base runners in nine innings is just flat-out gross.

Meanwhile for the O’s, Wei-Yin Chen took a rare loss by allowing four runs (only two were earned) over six innings.  Chen just didn’t seem to have it all together tonight, but his defense (aka Ryan Flaherty throwing error.) didn’t help him at times either.

This is a turn the page and move on loss.  We’ve got bigger fish to fry, babes.

Other Game Notes

JJ Hardy had the only Orioles’ hit.

Jonathan Schoop is 3 for his last 25.

Ryan Flaherty needs to quit committing errors, especially since he will probably be on the playoff roster.

With six games to go, the O’s are three games behind the Angels for the number one seed.

Buck confirmed that he will go with a four man rotation for the ALDS.

Next Up For The O’s
