The Rundown

What a pitiful showing by the Birds in the North side of Chicago this weekend. Today’s loss gave the O’s a disappointing 4-5 record on their nine-game road trip. And while the Birds were getting swept, the Yankees swept the White Sox to cut the Orioles’ AL East lead to six games. On a positive note, Miguel Gonzalez looked sharp in his first start in the big leagues since August 7. He allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three over 6.1 innings. The Cubs got their runs on an Arismendy Alcantara solo homer in the 5th inning, and an RBI double from Anthony Rizzo in the 6th. Gonzalez also made one hell of a play in the field to start the game.

Unfortunately for Gonzo, the Orioles’ bats couldn’t solve Tsuyoshi Wada. Wada earned the win after allowing only one run on one hit and one walk while striking out eight over 6.1 innings. He took a no-hitter into the 7th inning before Professional Hitter Steve Pearce put a charge into one.

That would be as close as the O’s would get. Neil Ramirez, Pedro Strop, and Hector Rondon combined to throw 2.2 scoreless endings to seal the win for the Cubs.

Other Game Notes

Nick Markakis is 0 for his last 20.

Chris Davis went 1-for-11 this series, and is now hitting .189. It’s amazing that mere months ago, I was dreading the day when Davis’ contract was set to expire. But now, I’d offer to drive him to the airport. Jesus Christ, he’s been awful.

During this series, former Orioles Wada and Jake Arrieta combined to hold the O’s to two runs over 13.1 innings while striking out 13. Un-fucking-believable.

The Birds combined to score only four runs during the series, good for an abysmal 1.33 runs per game.

Up Next For The O’s

The Birds are back home for a four-game series against the Rays.

Monday, August 25, at 7:05 PM on MASN 2

Chris Tillman RHP (10-5) vs. Jake Odorizzi RHP (9-10)

Let’s go O’s!
