We Handicap The Gotham

Our resident handicapper Cliff Brooks is on fire after crushing the Fountain of Youth card last Saturday at Gulfstream.  Seabass….not so much.  Here are their thoughts on Saturday’s Gotham Stakes.

For Two Bucks?  I’ll Keep Coming Back.

I was just reading the Daily Racing Form getting my picks ready for Saturday’s card at Aqueduct when I realized the best purchase ever is still the 2 dollar parimutuel ticket.  With the rising costs of everything in our economy from a loaf of bread to a gallon of gas , the 2 dollar bet has never changed.  It’s still 2 dollars. Can you believe that?  I know I still believe that the horse racing industry is ready for a major comeback, but I may be having delusions of grandeur.  Or maybe that’s just Man O’ War dancing through my head. Was that a great race horse or what?  He defined a whole generation of racing fans.

But I am sure of a few things as I get my horse racing fix tomorrow.  There will no Man O’ War types running Saturday at Aqueduct, and I will not be buying any 2 dollar parimutuel tickets.  Well, there may be some 2 dollar tickets ,but there will be in large piles.  So,here are a few nuggets for my loyal readers.

9th race—Use the #9 Head Hart Hoof over the #2 Comma to the Top.

10 th Race (The Gotham Stakes)  #9 Sky Captain is worth the top call here.  A  $210,000 Keenland purchase,he was scratched last Saturday at Gulfstream to step up north for this 3 yr. old Kentucky Derby prep race.  That is a very positive sign. This is also his 3rd start back from layoff and the longer distance the better for him.  Use him with #7 Vyjack, and #1 and #1A entries Transparent and Now and Then.

11th race—#3 Tough all Day, #4 Think I’m Hooked, and #5Revere–For you pick 3 players.

Good Luck!

New York , Here We Come.

The road to Kentucky goes through New York this week with the Gotham.  Aqueduct ‘s inner track will be humming all day with two other Graded Stakes races besides the Gotham.  The Gotham features Overanalyze who accomplished a lot as a two year old. But today dawns a new season for Overanalyze,  so of course I’ll try to beat him. Last week was another tough outting with several close losses.  But that just makes us more determined.  Let’s go get ’em.

Race 7 –    Top Flight Handicap G2…..This Grade 2 for the ladies seems a little on the light side as far as talent goes.  The #4 Summer Applause seems to be the filly with the most impressive resume.  But her last race off the lay-off was a disaster, so we’ll take a wait and see approach with her.  If she fires, she wins easy.  But we’ll go against her with Anthony Dutrow’s girl, #1 Twice The Lady.  She seems to be in form and Dutrow hits with 30% of stakes entries.  If he feels she’s ready to run a big one, well so do we.  5-1 odds add to the appeal.

Race8-    50k MSW ….. This maiden special weight for N.Y. breds looks chalky.  I’m going with the 1 and 1a entry of  Bond Vigilante and Impatient Investor.  Use with the #7 Hooked Forever who steps up from the maiden claiming ranks.

Race 9-   Tom Fool Handicap G3…..Fools we are for loving the ponies.  This Grade 3 is a real competitive sprint. Competetive races make for betting opportunities.  I love the #4 Johannesburg Smile.  He lost to the #9 last time out, but this time the outcome will be different.  Smile will have first run at the speed dual between the 9 Head Heart Hoof and the 2 Comma At The Top.  Johannesburg Smile is entering the third race of his form cycle and a bullet breeze indicates all systems go.  Fact that Pletcher has Johnny V. on the mount adds to appeal, along with Smile’s 3 wins here at Aqueduct.  This will be my biggest play of the day.  $40 win bet.  Use with 2 and #10 Smash in exactas.

Race 10-  Gotham Stakes. ….Overanalyze and Vyjack will be the favorites here but I like the #3 Escapefromreality.  He ran hard against Revolutionary last time out and I have a feeling there is room for improvement.  I think his new found stalking style fits the pace of this race.  He’ll be coming for the leaders at the top of the stretch.  Use him with Vyjack and Cliff’s pick Sky Captain.

Race 11-  Claim N2L…..The # 6 Tycoon Cat is not a good racehorse.  But neither are the others racing in this clunker.  Tycoon Cat showed a lot of effort last time out, coming from five wide down the stretch to just miss.  He’s got a new trainer and may be in good form.  He’s 15-1, so it’s worth the gamble.  Throw down $20 and pray.

Hope you enjoy the track this weekend….good luck!
