Violence Favored In Fountain Of Youth

Seabass and Cliff B give their Fountain of Youth Picks!

Seabass goes first:

Besides having one of the greatest names ever given to a racehorse, Violence also has the distinction of being  the morning line favorite in the Fountain of Youth, an important Kentucky Derby prep race being run at Gulfstream Park  in Florida on Saturday.  Violence is an extremely talented young colt who already has 3 wins in 3 career starts with earnings of over $500,000.  But those high early career earnings don’t mean squat anymore when it comes to the Kentucky Derby.  Three year olds now must qualify for the big race in May based on a designated points system, and The Fountain of Youth is worth 85 points all told.  (1st-4th place finishers get points. 50 to the winner.)  Violence hung in the stretch in his last win, the Cash Call Futurity, so the question going into the Fountain will be whether the young colt possesses the killer instinct needed in these deeper waters.  We will find out tomorrow.

Here are my win picks for Saturday 2/23 at Gulfstream.  Let’s go get ’em.

Race 1….. #5 Long Legged Girl…   This filly was 2nd in a sprint at this level in December.  She’s coming back to the dirt, and speed figs fit.  At 6-1 we are willing to take a shot.

Race 2…..#5 Picture Book…   The favorite (#4 English Crossing) just refuses to win so we’ll look to beat her.  Picture book gets blinkers and drops in to the claiming ranks.  We’ll play, especially at 6-1.

Race 3…..#7 Mil Basin Mama…  Favorite looks ready to win here.  Will use on top of exactas.

Race4…..#4 Silver Sashay…  She’s won two in a row…she’ll make it three here.

Race 5…..#5 Ruble…  Hard to argue against the favorite here so we won’t.

Race6…..#1 Double Reverse…  Love it when maiden claimers get moved up to maiden special weight. Means horse is training well enough to earn protection from other buyers.  Filly gets a cutback in distance and offers value.  She’s our play.

Race 7…..#4 Tesseron… Class of the filed.  Comes off a break with this tune up.

Race 8…..We love these turf races at Gulfstream.  This competitive field offers a great betting race.  The #7 Big Blue Spirit has caught our eye. This colt always seems to try hard and is in nice form since breaking his maiden two back.  We have a feeling this horse likes the track and likes to win.  He’ll be towards the front in a race in which whoever goes out there will be able to easily dictate pace. Recent work looks real solid and at 10-1 we are looking to make a splash.  Hammer.  They other contenders will be coming late so buckle up.

1st Big Blue Spirit, 2nd Godard, 3rd Achilles

Race 9…..#3 Dreaming of Julia.  The real talented filly starts her 2013 campaign with the Grade 2 Davona Dale.  #4 Live Lively may give her a bit of a challenge, but we won’t go against the 3.

Race 10….Data Link is the most talented horse in the Grade 3 Canadian Turf, but every time I play him he lets me down.  Plus he hasn’t raced since November so it may be a good time to try and beat him. So we’ll try.  #10 Za Approval has yet to race in a graded stakes, but there is a lot to like about the 5-year-old Gelding.  He’s in great form, he loves the distance, and he loves Gulfstream.  We’ll hope he’s ready for the big time at 5-1.

1st  Za Approval, 2nd Data Link, 3rd Beau Choix

Race 11….Fountain of Youth.  We’ll stick with Violence.  We love this horse.  Yeah he may have hung in his last, but he was just working out.  Todd Pletcher thinks he’s capable of much more and we agree.  Sit back and watch this guy go.

1st Violence, 2nd Falling Sky, 3rd Majestic Hussar

Last week was rough so we are looking for a bounce back.  Good Luck and enjoy the races.

The Road To Louisville

It is starting to feel a lot like the first Saturday in May. The horse racing is about to explode with new excitement for even the novice fan. The Triple Crown races, starting with the Kentucky Derby, create an incredible buzz for the industry. It takes center stage . The NCAA will have already crowned their National Champs of the hardwood. The NFL will be done with their draft ,free agency and mini camps. That leaves Horse Racing as a logical choice for the boob tube. The Horse Racing industry actually does a good job of promoting the 3 year olds . The Kentucky Derby is still the most exciting 2 minutes of any sport.

The prep races for the Derby start in earnest this weekend with The Fountain Of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park. It is the 11th race on the card. I’ll give you a few extra races for those of you who like to play the pick 3’s……Here we go.

7th race–We like #2 North Slope. He has the talent. Use him with the #4 Tesseron.

8th race– #3 Master Dunker with #4 Godard

9th race– #3 Lady of Julia with #2 Lady Banks

10th race — #1 Joe’s Blazing Aaron #4 Data Link

11th– #1 Orb with Violence#3

  1. Covering the horses could be your niche. It is such a dead industry though. Not sure why the state keeps propping it up.
