Tilly Just Silly As Birds Smack Rays Around 9-1.

The Run Down

Ah, it’s good to be home, babes.  The Orioles’ offense went absolutely ape-shit on the Tampa Bay Rays Monday night, perhaps taking out their weekend Cub frustrations on their visiting division rivals.  The Birds bashed five home runs in all, en route to the 9-1 win.  Back-to-back shots from Nick Markakis and Professional Hitter Steve Pearce, rang out in the third inning, and then back-to-back-to-back blasts came off the bats of Delmon Young, JJ Hardy, and Chris Davis in the fifth.  Delmon’s was an Earl Weaver, and the starting left fielder ended up going 3-3 with, the Earl, a double, 3 RBIs, a run scored, and 7 total bases.  After shitting the bed in Wrigley, it was nice to see the Orioles’ offense come to life on this beautiful Monday night in Baltimore.

The power will get all the press tonight, and because the team seemed to be in a late August mini-slump that may be justified, but the real story tonight might have been Chris Tillman.  Tilly was silly on the hilly tonight, allowing only three hits and no earned runs over seven full innings.  Despite an unearned run, Tillman’s defense helped him quite a bit, most notably on Adam Jones’, soon to be Baseball Tonight Web Gem, play in the sixth.  (Tilly only struck out two.) Mike Bordick said the play was, “like a video game.” With two on and nobody out Evan Longoria blasted a shot to left center.  Jones robbed the Rays’ star of a three-run-job and then gunned down Matt Joyce, who was trying to tag from first to second.  Double play babes. Tilly would then get James Loney to ground out to end the threat.  Not tonight, Eva.  Not tonight, says Adam Jones. The only other real Rays threat was in the third, but Tillman squashed that after “allowing” just the one unearned run.  Over his last five starts, Tillman has allowed just five earned runs over 35.2 innings. Solid stuff from a guy who is looking everything like a Game One in a Playoff Series starter.

Let’s take this opportunity to look at a few pictures of Eva Longoria: (Evan and Eva are not relations. But one cannot help think of Eva when one hears the name, Longoria…)

Other Game Notes

Nick Markakis broke out of a five game hitless streak by blasting a two-run homer in the third.

Chris Davis went 1-3 with the aforementioned home run and a walk.   He’s now batting .190!

Adam Jones and Jonathan Schoop both went 2-4.

Darren O’Day went one full inning.  It was a scoreless frame, of course.  O’Day’s ERA is 0.94.  Incredible.

Only 15,516 at the Yard on Monday night.  Seems pretty fucking weak for a team in first place on August 25th.  Just sayin’…..

Next Up For The Birds

Cobb (9-6) vs Chen (13-4)

Let’s Go O’s!
