Are the Maryland Terrapins a contender to win the national championship this year? Absolutely not. In fact, the negative fans out there will say they’ve been rather unimpressive, given they haven’t beaten any quality opponents, and each game seems to come down to the wire (they were dominated in the first half by Towson for fuck’s sake). And in part that’s true, they haven’t been a team that looks like they can compete with the top teams in the country. But with these Terps I’m choosing to look at this team as a glass half full.
The Terps are clearly going to go as far as Melo Trimble takes them this year, and so far, he’s been great. He’s getting to the basket again, and he’s been clutch late in games. I don’t know if this proves that Melo was less healthy than we thought last year, or if it’s just a matter of there being less talent to share the ball with this year, and less pressure to get everyone enough touches, but Melo looks like a rejuvenated player.
And outside of Melo, this team is made up of young quality players. There likely isn’t any NBA talent on this team, but there are a lot of role playing guys capable of doing their jobs who show great potential. And those are what quality teams are made of. Sure they will struggle at times this year, and possibly next, due to youth and inexperience, but I like what I see so far from this young group of guys.
To me, this year isn’t so much about competing for a top seed in the NCAA tournament as it is building a foundation of talent that will set the precedent for years to come and make Maryland a consistent national powerhouse again.
But no matter how far the Terps end up going this season, they’ve been incredibly fun to watch. Close games that come down to the wire, and the Terps come out on top. What more can you ask for?
