The Smell Of Horsecrap and Money: Today We Bet The Horses At The State Fair

Sports and Bets — September 1, 2014 at 11:07 am by

Ah, one of the best days of the year is here.  The last day of the Maryland State Fair is today and the Timonium Fairgrounds will be buzzing with folks attempting to cram in one more day of summer fun before the fall months begin.  And who can blame them?  The excitement of being off on a Monday for Labor Day, combined with opportunities for food smashing, booze swilling, and horse wagering creates a platform for fun that warms the cockles.

Timonium is awesome.  It’s a fun little track nestled into an old-school and intimate setting. This is horseracing, up close and personal.  The horses and jockeys are just a few feet away and every seat in the house is a good one.  (As is every spot on the rail.) Plus, all the good things inside the Maryland State fair are just a few feet away.  Run inside the fair, get a beer and a deep fried Berger Cookie, and settle in along the rail, there’s some ponies to play.

And did we mention that Saratoga was running too….

Today we’ll dive into the Timonium card and give you an early play from Saratoga.  Oh, and after you’ve finished winning money, head across the street to Michael’s for some crab and shrimp dip and a crabcake.  Good stuff, and the perfect way to end a perfect wagering day in Maryland.

The action doesn’t go too deep at Timonium, but the wagering is fun.  I’ve caught a few longshots in the past, but a lot of these races come out chalky.  No worries if you win on some favorites though, cashing tickets, is cashing tickets….

Post Time 1:05.  Let’s go get ’em…..

Race 1–  Looking for  at least a bit of value in this low level maiden claimer, we’ll go with the first time starter,#3, Go For The Deal.  Barn has had some success with first timers and youngsters and work tab has been sold and steady.  4-1 is worth a shot here against some career maidens and a 5-year-old second timer.

Race 2-  #3 Shuttlecock gets a freshening after an ugly run in the Charlestown slop.   Barn does well with horse off the break and Beyer figs are up to par. May have company up front, but doesn’t need the lead to win.  Bocachica has taken her to the winner’s circle before.  6-1 is juicy at the old Fairgrounds.

Race 3-  #5 Smoking For Free may benefit from cutback and class drop.  If he can run back to the 45.3 half from two back, he’ll go wire to wire to wire.  Speed demon.

Race 4-   1a Nina Linda is the second half of the coupled entry.  Need the lead type may get it here in the mad dash to four furlongs.  Pilot winning at almost a 30% clip at the fair.  Don’t like the lack of published works, but the quick wheel back has a live feel to it.  Chalky.

Race 5-  #8 Emelina ran them off their feet here last weekend in 9 length laugher and was claimed by a barn that does well with first races with a new purchase.  Slight step up and in stellar form.  7-2 would be a bargain.

Race 6-  #5 A.P. Wild broke his maiden here last year.  Huge improvement in last up in Delaware and works suggests form will hold.  Gets solid veteran pilot and a barn that commands respect.  All systems go in what should be a wire-to-wire try.

Race 7-  # Daystrike. Kenneth McPeek ships firster and son of Smart Strike down from New York and calls upon top jock Acosta for the assignment.  Trying to steal an easy one here?  #6 Silver Bop may have something to say about that.  Give edge to McPeek’s charge, but may do some odds watching on both to see if we can get any value.  Doubtful thought.  Play chalky for fun.

Race 8-  Gonna be tough to beat chalky speed demon #3 Joyous Music who is coming out of a key race and who has shown the quickest early foot of he bunch. Will be all out in this short 1/2 mile affair.  Won’t try to beat.  Playing exacta with the 2 and the 4.

Race 9-  #9 In The Juice has won $350k lifetime and is second back after a long layoff. Has plenty of back class and at 8-1 it’s worth the gamble that he’ll improve for this.  Even an even effort by his standards could beat these.  If not, or even if so, how about a nice quiet retirement for this guy?  Seems he’s earned it.

Have fun and good luck!

Saratoga Special:

Race 1 to get you in the black early:  1a Kitten’s Queen:  In sharp form for Michael Maker, who has had a great Saratoga meet.  Gets JJ aboard and has nice post to stalk just off the pace and get first run at the leaders down the stretch.  Heavy 1:00 play.  BOOOOOM! 6-1 ML
