The Run Down

David Ortiz and his ongoing weight problem carried the Sox Friday night and won the game for Boston in extra innings.  He began tonight’s scoring with a two run shot in the first frame off of O’s starter, Chris Tillman.  It stayed 2-0 until the bottom of the third.  It was then that Delmon Young and Adam Jones decided that they weren’t having anymore of that Sox shit in their house.  Young singled and then Adam Jones homered to right-center to tie the game at two.  The O’s would score two more in the fourth (One of those runs came off of Christian Walker’s first big league home run.) and then Young and Jones would do their thing again.  Young would set the table with a single in the fifth and then Jones would power him home again with another home run blast, this one to left.  Jones’ second shot would make it 6-2 Birds.  Ballgame.  Sure, the O’s added another run in the seventh after a Nelson Cruz RBI double, but the game was over well before that with the way that Chris Tillman was dealing smoke.

Tillman struggling in the first inning, allowing the Ortiz shot and throwing 25 pitches.  But after that, is was aces down and goose eggs up for Tilly.  Tillman would finish with seven innings pitched, only the two runs earned, and six strikeouts.  He ran into a little trouble in the fourth, but he pitched to just three batters in the second, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.  In fact, after the fourth, the Sox only managed one more base runner for the rest of the night, and that was a meaningless single allowed by Tommy Hunter in the ninth.  Once the Birds took the lead the Sox were dunzo, babes.

Tillman has now allowed three runs or fewer in twenty consecutive starts.  He also reached the 200 innings pitched mark for the year tonight, which leads the club.  Solid.  Tilly is the ace of this staff and our Game 1 pitcher in the ALDS.

Other Game Notes

Steve Pearce (wrist) and Nick Markakis (shoulder) sat out with minor injuries.  They are fine.

Christian Walker went 2-4 and hit his first major league dong.   He’s a first baseman with legit power.  What does his presence mean for Chris Davis’ future?

Delmon Young went 3-4.  He’s batting .299.  He’s another great, under the radar signing made by DD.

Adam Jones went 2-4 with the two bombs and four RBIs.  His house.

Ryan Flaherty also had two hits, but he committed another damn error.

The Birds scored their fourth run of the game on a Jonathan Schoop suicide squeeze.  Haven’t seen that in a minute.  Awesome.

Nelson Cruz now has 105 RBIs on the year.

The Red Sox are 26.5 games out of first.  Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!

Next Up For The O’s

Kelly (4-4) vs Gonzalez (9-8)

Rubber match, 1:35 P.M.

Let’s Go O’s!
