The Good & The Bad from Pirates v. Orioles (June 6-7 2017)

Well it was a short but very exciting series for the Baltimore Orioles. Two games, two wins, can’t ask for much more than that.  Its makes it even more satisfying that the Orioles probably should have lost both games, god knows as fans we’ve seen enough of the other side.

GOOD: Ninth Inning Magic

Both game the Orioles entered the ninth inning trailing the Pittsburgh Pirates, both games the Orioles forced extra innings, both games the Orioles won in extras. In Game 1 the Orioles trailed at one point 4-1 and 5-3 heading into the ninth when Johnny Baseball tied it with a two run HR.  Trumbo won the game in the tenth with a single.  In Game 2 again the Orioles trailed, this time 6-2 heading into the ninth, they scored 4 times capped off by a Trey Mancini two run HR.  Mancini would win the game in the 11TH with a 3 run shot.  Orioles saved their best for last.

BAD: Starting Pitching

Now when you make comebacks, there is usually a reason. For the Orioles it was the lack of success they were getting from their starters against Pittsburgh.  First Gausman, actually he didn’t pitch awful he was able to get into the seventh inning but a bad second inning led to a Pirates early lead, Gausman’s ERA is still in the high fives.  Wade Miley on the other hand was the complete opposite.  Miley was gone before the end of the third and the birds needed a lengthy outing from Mike Wright to stay in the game.

GOOD: Jonathan Schoop

I mentioned him earlier but he deserves a section of his own. Johnny baseball is right now the best hitter in the Baltimore Orioles lineup.  Schoop had two home runs in game 1 including the game tying shot.  He added two more hits in game 2 on Wednesday night.  Johnny baseball is now hitting .292 on the season, he’s never finished a season hitting above .280.

BAD: Edwin Jackson’s debut

So we probably should not expect much from a journeyman pitcher with a career ERA above 4.50, and I don’t. That being said his first outing with the Orioles could’ve gone a tad bit better.  Jackson pitched in Game 2 and went two and two thirds allowing two run on 4 hits and walking two as well.  Jackson pitching is nothing more than giving other arms a rest, also it made last night comeback more fun, so there’s that!

I can’t end this post without mentioning Trey Mancini.  Mancini had two hits in the second game of the series.  The first was a game tying 2 run HR, the second was a game winning 2 run HR.  Still can’t believe there was a serious debate of leaving Mancini in the minor leagues when the season started.

Great rebound series for the Orioles after the disappointing end to the Red Sox series. Winning two games they really had no business winning before heading on a week long road trip helps boost the team.  Speaking of that road trip, Thursday is a one game make up against the Nats in DC then it’s New York and Chicago (playing the White Sox) for a week.
