The Good & The Bad from Orioles v. White Sox (June 12-15 2017)

It just doesn’t feel like it’s getting any better does it.  This series in my opinion was worse than the 3 game sweep in New York.  You could at least argue that the Yankees are one of the best teams in the league and they ran into them at the wrong time.  The White Sox, plain and simple are not a good baseball team.  It makes these three losses in 4 games look pretty bad.

GOOD: Wellington Castillo

When healthy and let me emphasize that, when healthy Castillo has been one of the better and most consistent Orioles in the lineup.  Castillo registered hits in 3 of the 4 games including a 5 RBI performance in Game 3 that included a Grand Slam.  Castillo’s bat will need to stay in the lineup if the Orioles have any chance of turning things around this season.

BAD: Wade Miley

Early in the season when the Orioles were playing better, Wade Miley was one of the more pleasant surprises.  Lately he seems to be reverting back to the Wade Miley that struggled immensely last season.  Through May Miley had 10 starts and his ERA was a pretty good 3.02.  Since the beginning of June it’s been really bad, Miley has had three starts and an ERA of 8.25.  Against the White Sox he lasted only two and a third and allowed 6 earned runs.

GOOD: Trey Mancini

Mancini had a really good series in Chicago.  In the four games Mancini hit .437 with a home run and 4 RBI.  Mancini also got a chance to play in his natural position of first base.  With the injury to Davis, Mancini will need to be relied upon even more now with his bat and now the glove.

BAD: Orioles are now 11-23 on the road

One reason for the Orioles recent struggles has been their lack of good play on the road.  After losing 3 out of 4 in Chicago the O’s road record dropped to 11-23 on the season.  In their last 11 road games the Orioles are 1-10.  The Orioles play at Oriole Park on the other hand has been pretty good at 21-10.  One way for the Orioles to get back on track is to start playing better on the road.

The Orioles need to figure out how to turn things around and quick.  The Orioles are now under .500 for the first time this season and are even worse they are tied for last place in the AL East, not a place you want to be.  Maybe some home cooking will do the Orioles right, they head home for a three game series against the St. Louis Cardinals starting Friday night.
