The Good & The Bad from Orioles v. Reds (April 18-20 2017)

Ten wins in your first fourteen games, not bad for a team most had predicted to finish last in the American League East.  It was a strange series in Cincinnati, not a lot of offense but the Orioles were able to get 2 wins.  Also major props to the Orioles fans making a ton of noise in Cincy, always awesome to hear that.

GOOD: Orioles win another series

The Orioles have played in five series so far in 2017, and they have yet to lose one.  So it’s very easy to see why they are 10-4 and in first place in the American League East.  The most impressive part is the close games that the Orioles are winning.  8 of the Orioles 10 wins have been by 2 runs or less.  This team is showing some early grit that can only help them as the season wears on.

BAD: Strikeouts

I love that this team mashes home runs like no other.  However when you swing for the fences like this team you are bound to strike out a few times.  In the first two games the Orioles struck out 26 times in 67 official at bats, that’s almost 40% of the time.  They were a little better at not striking out in game 3, only 9 times in the 10 inning win.  Again it’s something that comes with the territory let’s just hope it’s not at a 40% clip or higher the rest of the season.

GOOD: Ubaldo Jimenez & Wade Miley

All I can say is wow.  Did not expect the outings that both Ubaldo Jimenez and Wade Miley had in Cincinnati.  It’s no secret that I’m not a big fan of either guy in the Orioles rotation, more so Ubaldo than Miley.  Even with that have to give both guys credit for their performances.

Ubaldo Jimenez – 7.2 IP, 0 ER, 3 Strikeouts

Wade Miley – 8 IP, 1 ER, 11 Strikeouts

Both guys dominated the Reds, I don’t expect these type of performances all the time from these two but here’s hoping they can both build on them and at least be more consistent starting pitchers.

BAD: Kevin Gausman

On the exact opposite end of the spectrum is Kevin Gausman.  Gausman pitched in game 1 and couldn’t finish 3 innings and gave up 8 runs in his short outing.  Something has been off about Gausman this season, he’s been very inconsistent.  Only one of his 4 starts this season has gone at least 6 innings, and with the 8 runs he gave up his ERA shot up to 7.23 for the season.  We all know Kevin Gausman can pitch better than he has, mostly because we’ve seen him do it.

BONUS GOOD:  The Pie Returns!!!

Got to give some love to Brad Brach as well.  It’s good to know that if Zach Britton is hurt or needs a day off here and there someone can fill in.  Brach made quick work of the Reds in both his save opportunities in the series.

So after a three game break the Orioles go right back into playing against the AL East.  A huge early season 3 game weekend series against the Red Sox starts Friday night at Camden Yards.
