The Gas-Man Throws a Beaut, But O’s Lose Late Inning Heartbreaker To Rangers 2-0.

The Run Down

Kevin Gausman and Yovani Gallardo dueled to a scoreless draw tonight at the Yard.  It was definitely a thing of beauty to watch the Gas-man go toe-to-toe with Gallardo.  Gausman went 6.1 scoreless frames, scattering four hits, two walks, and striking out seven.  Gallardo was just as effective, throwing six full and allowing just two hits and three walks, all while striking out two. This was big league pitching, and if the Birds can’t find a way to keep Gausman in the rotation, well, then they’re making a big mistake.

Rather unjustly, neither pitcher would factor in the decision.  It would come down to the bullpens and on paper the Birds held the advantage.  (The Rangers rank 14th of 15 AL teams in bullpen ERA and the Orioles rank 3rd.)  But the Texas bullpen has pitched well in this series and they sure as shit don’t play games on paper.  Unfortunately for the Birds, and my coronary arteries, the Ranger relievers would basically shut down the O’s while the Eighties Bully, Chaz Roe, would play the heel for the Birds.

After coming on to bail out an utterly ineffective Brian Matusz in the eighth, Roe would again take the hill in the ninth.  (A walk, a hit, and no outs for Matusz.) Roe would walk the lead-off batter to start the final frame, so you know how this is going to play out.  Two hits and some missed cut-off men, and suddenly it was 2-0 Texas.

It felt like 1,000-o.

There is absolutely nothing worse than wasting a quality start. Tough series, babes.

Other Game Notes

The Birds brought their gloves tonight. The defensive gems started in the first with this David Lough grab in left….

Then there was this gorgeousness in the sixth…

David Lough also went diving and catching a liner in the seventh.   He also had two hits.  Have a day, David!

Manny Machado had the only other O’s hit.

Darren O’Day pitched 1.1 innings of perfect baseball in immediate relief of Gausman.

Next Up For The O’s

The Birds hit the road for a weekend series with the White Sox.

Jimenez (7-3) vs Dank (3-8)

Let’s Go O’s!
