Terps Blow Out Va Tech. And Where Is Big Chuck Mitchell?

After another gut wrenching, double OT loss on Sunday against Clemson, I was a little nervous that the Terps would just fold against a horrible Virginia Tech team tonight at the Comcast Center.  In the first half, that nervousness looked justified as the Terps came out sluggish and even trailed the Hokies 29-28 at the break.  But the Terps would dominate the second half, outscoring Va Tech 36-18 in the second frame en route to a 64-47 blowout.  The Terps did it in that second half with defense as they clamped down on a struggling Tech team.  Jake Layman and Dez Wells paced the Terps on offense with 13 and 11 points respectively.

But the real spark for Maryland may have come from Charles Mitchell, and not for his play, but for his frustration and benching. Big Chuck didn’t return to the Maryland bench after an apparent altercation with an assistant coach at halftime.   He returned to the bench at around the 8:00 minute mark, but did not re-enter the game.  Of course Twitter was afire with theories on Big Chuck’s whereabouts.
