SUP simply stands for “Stand Up Paddle Boarding”.  SUP can be done in bays, oceans, lakes, and rivers.  Here in Baltimore, there are many places to SUP.  My personal favorites are Wilson Point in Middle River, Gunpowder State Park, and the Baltimore Inner Harbor.  You can get an amazing view of Canton, Fells Point, Ft. McHenry, and the Inner Harbor from a SUP.  Though paddling in the Inner Harbor is for experienced paddlers because of the weird currents, boat traffic, and the fact that a paddler must be familiar with the area from the water.
A good local spot to get started is on the Gunpowder. Ultimate Water Sports at the Gunpowder State Park in Middle River rents all the equipment needed to try stand up paddle boarding.  They can be reached at www.ultimatewatersports.com for more information.
Annapolis, MD. Is another great place to SUP.  ONE can paddle around historic downtown Annapolis, on the Severn River, and around the Naval Academy.  You can contact Stand Up Paddle Annapolis for all of your SUP needs.  They offer rentals, lessons, and board and gear sales.  Contact them at INFO@SUPANNAPOLIS.COM (OR 443-829-2266) or just check out their website at  www.supsannapolis.com.
I began SUPing three years ago as a way to get out on the water.  Coming from a surfing background and living in Baltimore, I realized I could not always make it to the beach to surf when the waves were good.  I had read about SUPing in a magazine and decided to order a board and a paddle and give it a try.  I was instantly hooked.  I soon learned what a great core and cardio workout SUPing gave me.  I had started paddling strictly for the fun of it, but the strong workout quickly became an added benefit.

After paddling on my own for a little while I was introduced to the Delmarva racing scene . I attended my frst race in Annapolis, hosted by SUP Annapolis and had a great time.  I have since participated in race in Maryland, Delaware, and DC. The SUP race scene is about meeting new people and having fun SUPing.  Everyone is welcome, whether they are a beginner, or an elite paddler. So rent a board, take a lesson, and get paddling.  Stand up paddling can have a very positive impact on your life, it did for me.  If you have any questions you can email me at supbryan.barton@gmail.com.

Get out there and SUP dude.
