Schoop Makes Early Mark with Two Run Shot

The Orioles’ second base competition is going to be one of the most interesting Bird stories to follow down in Sarasota this spring.  Many members of the media, and fans alike, seem to think that the job at the two bag is Ryan Flaherty’s to start the season. I don’t see it like that.

“Not so fast Flaherty, you’re going to have to earn it this season”

At this point we have a general idea of what Flaherty is. Maybe he takes a step forward this year, but I’m not expecting a huge jump. There are a number of guys in camp who want the job.  Players like  Jemile Week, Alexi Casilla, and Orioles top position prospect Jonathan Schoop.  If Flaherty wants the job he’s going to have to win it, Buck’s not just going to give it away.

“Schoop making play at AAA, but is he ready for the bigs”

Schoop made a very early spring statement today, launching a two-run dinger  out of the park in the Orioles’ first intra-squad game.  It will be a long spring battle, but there wasn’t a better way for Schoop to get things started. My opinion is that no matter who starts the season at second base, Schoop will finish the season there. I see Schoop  being something of  a Manny Machado type call up in 2012; a young guy making an impact down the stretch.  Schoop is an all around good ball player. He can field, hit for average, and swing the lumber with some pop (like he showed today). He’s our top Position prospect for a reason. I for one, am just ready for him to go from being a solid prospect to a big-leaguer. Maybe, and hopefully, he’ll continue to show us this spring that he’s ready for it too.

  1. Schoop does it again today launching another bomb. This time off Norris to dead center.
