The Holy Bull is the first of many prep races that will help determine the field for the Kentucky Derby.  It’s run at beautiful Gulfstream Park in South Florida, and this year the race features  2-year old Breeder’s Cup Champion Shanghai Bobby.   In Maryland going to the track used to be a rite of manhood passed from father to son.  If you couldn’t read a racing form and bet the ponies, well you just weren’t a man yet.  We here at Charm City Wire believe in this old school mantra.  So get your ass outta bed Saturday, buy a form, drive to the track, and drink beer and gamble.  Wear a fedora if you want, but just go be a man dammit!

Here are my choices for Saturday’s Card at Gulfstream…..Resident handicapper Cliff B’s picks will follow.  Enjoy.

Race 1…    I’m looking for the favorite Double Judge to bounce off of what was his best performance in a year.  There looks to be some speed up front in this one, so I’ll look for some value to come off the pace.  #9 Cover Price fits this profile.  At 6-1 look for this veteran late.

2nd…#7 No Act

3rd…#8 On Appeal

Race 2…In a field of mediocre maidens, we’ll go with the #1 Black Heir.  She flashed some brief speed in her first start in December, and at 6-1 we’ll play.  Steady work tab and 1st time Lasix add to the appeal.

2nd…#5 Colormekitten

3rd…#3 Ashley’s Babe

Race3…#3 Sky Captain comes into this 1 1/8 mile contest off a December 12th race that saw the 2nd and 3rd place finishers win their next time out.  Barn has this colt looking primed and does well with sprint to route angle.

2nd…#1 Taken By Storm

3rd…#2 Cerro

Race #4…Hard to go against Pletcher/Napravnik combo in this spot. (Hitting at 37% clip.)  Looking for their talented gelding #2 Yes I’m Awesome to be awesome and hold off the favorite #4 Golden Ticket

3rd…#8 Rightfully So

Race #5…In this OC 75k for three year olds I’ll look for #1 Saylor Creek to make a nice stretch run like he did back on November 18th.  Horse looks fresh and McPeek should have him ready to fire in this nice looking field.

2nd…#3 Orb

3rd…#4 Looking Cool

Race #6…In a field with plenty of first time starters I’ll look for some experience.  #3 Gigglin’ Gal come close at the 7 furlong distance.  She looks all systems go.

2nd…#5 Gadget Girl

3rd…#1 Sister State

Race #7…In this 1 1/8 OC the 2 favorites are coming out of maiden victories.  They’ve never run against winners before, so we’ll go with a colt that has.  #4 Newfound Zapper comes off a solid 3rd in a 100k stakes race.  Even though his former jockey Rosario leaves to takes Bill Mott’s mount, we’ll stick with this hunch play.

2nd…#1 Draw Two

3rd…#2 Squall King

Race #8…Kauai Katie looked fantastic in her 2013 debut, crushing the field of the Grade 3 Old Hat and posting a 101 Beyer.  We won’t play against her here.

2nd…#3 My Happy Face

3rd…#2 Fusaichiwonderful

Race #9…Maiden Special Weight before the feature?….ugh…#4 Federal Agent looked solid in his 1st turf start.  I’ll look for this son of Curlin to break his maiden here.

2nd…#6 Oflee Fast

3rd…#9 Timeless Indy

Race #10 The Holy Bull…#1 Shanghai Bobby is an obvious favorite here.  He’s never lost and his battle to win in the stretch run of the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile was awesome.  I love this horse.  He tries hard every time.  But in this spot I’ll play the contrarian and go for the #4 Bern Identity.  Kelly Breen has this colt training well and he may be ready to pop.  Look for him to come late and edge the Juvenile Champ.

3rd…Frac Daddy
