The release of Elvis Dumervil opens up $6 million of salary cap space. — Jeff Zrebiec (@jeffzrebiecsun) March 8, 2017
The writing was on the wall, as Elvis Dumervil is now 33 years old, has had some difficulties with injuries recently, has a large cap hit, and ultimately isn’t the same player he used to be. The Ravens pass rush needed to get younger, with Dumervil and Suggs both aging, and releasing Dumervil was the right move.
Dumervil set the Ravens single season sack record with 17.0 in the 2014 season, and made the Pro Bowl twice while in Baltimore.
