Pearce’s Grand Salami, Hardy’s Clutch Single Lifts Birds To Series Win Versus Mariners

The Run Down

The Birds bookended a Steve Pearce grand-slam and a JJ Hardy game winning single around a more than two hour two hour rain delay to beat the Seattle Mariners 5-4. The win gave the Birds the series against the Seattle club and it brought Baltimore ever closer to .500. (18-20)

Chris Tillman got the start and he gave up one earned over three innings, but the rains cut his performance short and Tillman didn’t return after the long break between the third and fourth innings.  The O’s would parade out six more pitchers to finish the game.  Matusz and McFarland would give up the runs that would tie the contest up at four and Tommy Hunter would get the win by pitching a scoreless eighth.  Zach Britton would wrap up the game with a 1-2-3 9th frame for his ninth save of the season. Good guys win on get-away day and it’s off to sunny Miami for Birds for a weekend series with the crappy Marlins.

Other Game Notes

Manny Machado committed his ninth error of the season in the sixth inning on a Chris Taylor grounder.  All these E’s at the hot corner are just plain bizarre.  Even sweet grandmothers in Highlandtown are getting upset at Manny…

Jimmy Paredes of course had a hit. He is now batting .342.

Pearce’s grand slam was the first of his career.

Ryan Lavarnway went 0-2 with two walks.  He is batting a nauseating .125.

Today brought back some old O’s thoughts, for whatever reason.  Game winning RBIs like Hardy had today remind me of Eddie Murray. When MLB used to keep track of game winning RBIs, Murray was always among the league leaders.  And rain delays always remind me of Rick Dempsey…..

Fast forward this one to the 4:43 mark to see Dempsey at Memorial Stadium…….

Next Up For The O’s

The Birds travel to Miami to take on the struggling Marlins.

Friday 7:10, Marlins Park

Jimenez (3-3) vs Alvarez (0-3)

Time to make some noise.  Let’s Go O’s!
