O’s Bullpen Blows Scoreless Pitchers’ Duel, Lose 3-0

Wei-Yin Chen looked great out there on the mound Friday night for the Orioles, going 6 scoreless innings and allowing 4 hits and 3 walks. Chen also recorded 3 K’s. Unfortunately for the boys in black and orange, the Rays’ Alex Cobb also threw a scoreless outing over 7 innings, striking out four Orioles along the way.

Friday night was rare occasion for the Orioles’ bullpen, as they did not hold up their end of the bargain. The pen pitched two innings, and gave up the only three runs of the ball game. Ryan Webb, who relieved Chen after the sixth inning, pitched a scoreless seventh. He followed that up by allowing the first two batters of the eighth to reach base, and, after Evan Meek got done with his worthless 0.1 inning pitched, Webb was charged with two earned runs. Meek was charged with the third earned run. Joe Saunders finished up the eighth, going 0.2 innings, while stranding a base runner and not allowing a run. It would be awful nice if he worked well out of the bullpen for the O’s down the stretch, especially with Andrew Miller’s health in question.

Can we put the Evan Meek experiment to rest? The guy has just been awful this season, and while he did not record the loss today, has been nothing short of a disappointment following the strong Spring Training he had. His ERA currently sits at 7.41 for the year. Get him out of there.

Other Game Notes:

The Orioles recorded six hits during the game. All were singles.

The Yankees and Blue Jays both lost, so the O’s still sit pretty with a 9.5 game lead in the AL East.

After a strong showing against the Reds during the middle of this week, the O’s will have to win the next two games to take this series from the Rays before heading to Boston to battle a pathetic Red Sox squad on Monday.

You can’t win ’em all, and we just have to accept the fact that the Rays’ pitching was just better than the O’s pitching on this night.

Up Next For The Birds:

Saturday, September 6th, 1:05 pm. Gausman (7-7) vs. Smyly (3-1)
