Orioles win series in New York

Well that series had a little bit of everything.  Two extra inning wins for the Orioles, multiple challenges and overturned plays, and it was capped off by Brad Brach taking us on a little adventure in Sunday’s finale, after the Orioles battled back from a 5-0 deficit.  The Orioles still have their problems but taking 3 of 4 in the Bronx helps.

GOOD: Manny Machado

Manny had a very quiet start to the 2018 season, and then he arrived in Yankee Stadium.  Machado had a rough start going 0-4 in Game 1.  He quickly recovered with a 4 hit Game 2 including 2 Home Runs off starter CC Sabathia.  Even with that 0 for 4 in Game 1 Machado batted .368 in the series and had RBIs in each of the last three games at Yankee Stadium.

BAD: Mike Wright can’t complete one inning

I mentioned in the open that the Orioles battled back from a 5-0 deficit on Sunday, well Mike Wright was the reason.  Wright pitched in the finale of the 4 game series and pitched just two-thirds of an inning allowing 5 runs even though only two of them were earned.  It just wasn’t a good showing by Wright and you have to believe that when Alex Cobb is ready to go that Wright will be the odd man out.

GOOD: Keeping Judge and Stanton in check

Every time any team goes up against the Yankees this season the two names that will be mentioned more than any other is Aaron Judge & Giancarlo Stanton, and for good reason.  In this 4 game series the O’s did a great job keeping those two in check.  Judge and Stanton combined 7 for 36 (.194) against the Orioles and only hit one home run.  Stanton was the one who really struggled, going hit less in 3 of the 4 games and striking out 8 times in 4 games.

GOOD: Bullpen has bounce back series

Against the Astros the Orioles bullpen had some problems.  Against the Yankees it was a much better performance.  The Orioles bullpen threw 26 innings in this series allowing 7 earned runs, for an ERA of 2.42.  The standout performance was in Game 2’s 14 inning marathon when the bullpen pitched 9 innings allowing just one run on two hits.  The Orioles have needed to use their bullpen a lot to start the 2018 season, the starters need to start going deeper into games.

After the three wins in New York the Orioles improve to 4-6 on the season.  Again the O’s still have their issues but going 3-1 in a place where they only won twice all of 2017 has got to be good for the confidence.  Up next for the birds is a short 3 game home trip against the Toronto Blue Jays starting on Monday.
