Orioles vs. Yankees Series Preview

Sports and Bets — August 11, 2014 at 6:36 pm by

The Birds will wrap up their six-game home stand with a three-game series against the third-place Yankees. The Yankees are six games back of the O’s, and this series presents a great opportunity for the O’s to extend that margin. The Birds will have the clear advantage in every pitching matchup during this series; let’s just hope that they can capitalize against these mediocre arms. Pitchers of this caliber have inexplicably given the O’s trouble this season. It’s time for the Birds to put this depleted Yankees roster out of its misery with a haymaker right to their kisser.

Bud Norris RHP (9-7) vs. Chris Capuano LHP (1-2)

Norris’ Season Stats: 115 IP, 86 Ks, 3.68 ERA, 1.26 WHIP

Norris’ Last Three Starts: 1-1, 17.1 IP, 16 Ks, 3.12 ERA, 1.56 WHIP

Capuano’s Season Stats: 50.2 IP, 46 Ks, 3.91 ERA, 1.42 WHIP

Capuano’s Last Three Starts: 0-1, 19 IP, 17 Ks, 2.84 ERA, 1.21 WHIP

Fortunately for the Birds, Norris will be making this start at home. On the season, Norris has a 2.61 ERA over eight home starts, and a 4.55 ERA over 11 road starts. For his career, Norris has a 3.51 home ERA, and a 5.12 road ERA. Norris has gotta stop firing up Night Nurses From Jersey, and get some shut-eye on these trips. Norris’ only career start against the Yankees came earlier this season, and he pitched very well until leaving the game with a groin injury. Norris earned the win after allowing one run on three hits and two walks, with four strikeouts over five innings.

The wily veteran, Chris Capuano, began the season as a member of the Red Sox bullpen. He posted a 4.55 ERA over 31.2 innings, and was designated for assignment. The Rockies picked him up, and he made four starts in their minor league system before being traded to the Yankees for cash considerations. Capuano’s made three starts for the Yankees, and as the numbers above show, the southpaw has been dealing. This will be his first start against the O’s, but he did pitch against them earlier this season in relief. In 3.2 career innings against the Birds, Capuano has a 4.91 ERA and 1.64 WHIP.

Good News: Delmon Young is 2-for-2, Nelson Cruz is 1-for-1, and Chris Davis is 1-for-1 off Capuano. Jacoby Ellsbury is 1-for-7, Martin Prado is 1-for-5, Brendan Ryan is 0-for-7 off Norris.

Bad News: Nick Hundley is 0-for-9, Nick Markakis is 0-for-2, and J.J. Hardy is 0-for-2 off Capuano. Carlos Beltran is 8-for-26, Stephen Drew is 6-for-13, and Chase Headley is 4-for-12 with a HR off Norris.

Wei-Yin Chen LHP (12-4) vs. Shane Greene RHP (3-1)

Chen’s Season Stats: 129.1 IP, 96 Ks, 3.90 ERA, 1.27 WHIP

Chen’s Last Three Starts: 2-1, 20.1 IP, 17 Ks, 2.21 ERA, 1.08 WHIP

Greene’s Season Stats: 37.1 IP, 29 Ks, 2.89 ERA, 1.21 WHIP

Greene’s Last Three Starts: 1-0, 18 IP, 12 Ks, 3.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP

Chen has really struggled against the Yankees over his career. In eight starts, he’s 2-3 with a 5.76 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. In his only start against the Yankees this year, things didn’t go much better for Chen, but he was able to pick up the win. He gave up four runs on nine hits while striking out three over five innings. On a positive note, Chen is 3-1 with a 2.84 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in his four starts since the All-Star Break.

Greene was thrown into the Yankees’ rotation due to injuries, and not much was expected from the 25-year-old rookie. His numbers in the minors weren’t special, and he wasn’t regarded as a top prospect. But that hasn’t stopped him from putting up some damn fine numbers over his first six starts in the big leagues. He saw the O’s for the first time in his career on July 12, and was dominant over 7.1 shutout innings. He earned the win, and only gave up four hits and two walks while striking out nine. Hopefully, the Birds will have a better game plan for attacking Greene this time around. Tommy Hunter’s itching for some more bullpen homers from his teammates on this home stand.

Good News: In 152 career games against the Yankees, Markakis is slashing .299/.360/.449 with 18 HRs and 79 runs scored. Brendan Ryan is 0-for-9, Ichiro Suzuki is 1-for-9, and Mark Teixeira is 2-for-9 off Chen.

Bad News: As a team, the O’s are 4-for-24 off Greene. Derek Jeter is 6-for-21 with a HR, Ellsbury is 6-for-13, and Brett Gardner is 5-for-12 with a HR off Chen.

Wednesday, August 13, 7:05 PM MASN & ESPN

Chris Tillman RHP (9-5) vs. Michael Pineda RHP (2-2)

Tillman’s Season Stats: 149.2 IP, 102 Ks, 3.73 ERA, 1.29 WHIP

Tillman’s Last Three Starts: 2-0, 18.2 IP, 19 Ks, 2.41 ERA, 0.86 WHIP

Pineda’s Season Stats: 19.2 IP, 15 Ks, 1.83 ERA, 1.02 WHIP

Tillman is really throwing the ball well right now, posting quality starts in six of his last seven outings. Tillman is 2-0 in five starts since the All-Star Break, and has a 2.30 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. He’s been knocked around by the Yankees over his 12 career starts, recording a 5.64 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. But he has had success against the Yankees in his two starts this season, pitching to a 1.98 ERA and 1.32 WHIP.

This will be Pineda’s first start since April 23 due to a strained back muscle. He was also ejected from that April 23 start for using pine tar. Pineda has faced the O’s twice in his career and both starts came in 2011, his rookie year. In these starts, Pineda is 0-0 with a 2.77 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, and has struck out 13 batters in 13 innings.

Good News: Jones is 3-for-6, Hardy is 3-for-5 with two HRs, and Davis is 1-for-3 with a HR off Pineda. Gardner is 5-for-21, and Suzuki is 4-for-24 off Tillman.

Bad News: Cruz is 1-for-5, Markakis is 1-for-5, and Young is 0-for-3 off Pineda. Ellsbury is 7-for-25 with a HR, Jeter is 8-for-20, Teixeira is 5-for-15, Drew is 3-for-9 with a HR, and Francisco Cervelli is 3-for-8 off Tillman.

Enjoy the games, and let’s go O’s
