Orioles drop first series of 2018

So after a long, up and down off season, our Baltimore Orioles returned to Oriole Park.  The Minnesota Twins are a team that the Orioles will likely be competing with for a wild card spot.  After this opening series the Twins have the early leg up on the Orioles.  Time to look back on what was good and what was bad, spoiler alert not a lot of good from the Orange and Black.

GOOD: Dylan Bundy’s strong Opening Day start

Let’s start with something that was really fun to watch, Dylan Bundy.  On Opening Day Bundy was dazzling throwing 7 scoreless innings with 7 strikeouts.  It’s only one start but considering how well the Twins hit in the rest of the series, this is a good sign for the Orioles number one pitcher.

BAD: Orioles bats start season ice cold

The Orioles might have won at least one game in this series but the bats were nonexistent for all three.  Opening Day was an exciting extra inning walk off but the O’s only registered 5 hits in those 11 innings.  The Orioles were nearly no hit in game 2 and in game 3 the Orioles mustered only 3 hits.  In the series the Orioles went 11 for 94, that’s a .117 batting average.  With the two teams who played in last year’s ALCS coming up on the schedule, the bats better start heating up.

BAD:  Chris Davis as lead off hitter

Now I’ll be the first to admit, the days of the classic lead off hitter are long gone in baseball.  That being said, I’m not sure Chris Davis would be my top choice.  Davis went hit less against the Twins (0-12) and was only on base twice with a couple walks.  Silver lining in Davis’ struggles, he only struck out once in the opening series, baby steps.

BAD: Brad Brach’s blown save

Even in the game the Orioles won in this series something bad happened.  Brad Brach is (for now) the closer for the Orioles while Zach Britton recovers.  Brach’s first chance of the season he had a 2-0 lead and was only able to record 2 outs as the Twins tied it to send the game into extras.  Brach did have 18 saves in 2017 but also 6 blown saves.  If the struggles continue for Brach we could see Mychal Givens get some chances before Britton’s return.

I warned you, it was not a very good opening series for the Baltimore Orioles.  The good thing, there are 159 games to go; this is a marathon, not a sprint.  Up next for the Orioles is a really tough road trip.  Monday starts a 3 game series with the World Series Champs Houston Astros, followed by a 4 game trip to Yankee stadium.
