Sources: welington Castillo has deal with orioles

Well it looks like Matt Wieters’ days are officially over in Baltimore. We kind of knew this was coming, but today makes it real. Castillo is known for his bat more than his glove, and his pitch framing is thought to be below average, which is something that doesn’t sound especially great when you have a bad pitching staff. He hit .264 with 14 homers and 68 RBIs last year. Those are pretty good stats for a catcher, and arguably an improvement over Matt Wieters’ .243/17/66 2016 line.
And there’s no denying from a hitting standpoint Castillo is a huge step over Caleb Joseph, or anyone else in the organization until Chance Sisco is ready to take the reigns. Assuming his catching abilities don’t harm the pitching staff, this is a good signing for the Orioles.
