Orioles Acquiring Korean “Ace” Suk-Min Yoon? Right?

The Orioles have made an offer to Korean “Ace” Suk-Min Yoon.  Yoon, via his official Twitter picture below, announced he has chosen to head to Charm City.  Of course, the team has yet to announce this signing as official, which is leading to some local confusion.  But Twitter is the truth these days, right?

“Sweet Nike Shirt and an O’s Fitted, I’m coming to Baltimore”

There were a number of teams including the Giants, Cubs, and Rangers, who had interest in signing the 27-year-old right hander. Yoon isn’t the Yanks Tanaka, but he’s still been damn good in the Korean league. Yoon was the league MVP in 2011 posting an ERA of 2.45, and a record of 17-5. I’m sure the price wasn’t the same for Yoon as Tanaka either. Yoon has been a reliever, closer, and starter. Yoon suffered a shoulder injury in 2013 and went back to being a reliever, so the Oriole’s exact vision of how Yoon will contribute to the club is still unclear.

The Oriole’s like international pitching signings (Chen, Wada, and don’t forget Uehara). Sometimes they work out, and sometimes they don’t. We don’t go after the top-tier international signings like Tanaka or Matsuzaka because that type of gamble is one that takes place at the high rollers table, and the Oriole’s don’t play there.  But this could be a nice signing.  In fact, I like this signing a lot more than other potential pitching additions I thought might realistically end up in Baltimore.

Of course Yoon hasn’t passed his physical yet, so stay tuned.
