NCAA Bracket Busters, Sleepers, and Final Four Picks

It’s everyone favorite time of year, NCAA Tournament time.  The NCAA brackets are a gambling man’s dream! While everyone is putting the final touches on their bracket here a few of my thoughts on the big dance.

Don’t Believe the Hype:

Here a few highly seeded teams that I’m going to avoid taking too deep into the tournament.

1) Wichita St- With a number one seed, Wichita State also made the Final Four last year, they haven’t lost a game all season. While the Shockers are undefeated they haven’t played anyone yet, and they are going to run into some goods squads in a tough Midwest region.  Brutal bracket alert.

 2) Villanova- A great regular season for the Wildcats was followed by an early dismissal from the Big East Conference tournament. Losing to Seton Hall, who finished the year 17-17 overall and 6-12 in the Big East, wasn’t a strong showing for the Wildcats. Not sure which Nova team will show up, but based on their last performance I wouldn’t put too much confidence in this #2 seed.

3) Syracuse- What looked like a perfect season in their first year in the ACC quickly crashed and burned for the Orange in late February and March.  They still managed to earn a #3 seed in the NCAA Tourney but this isn’t the same team that looked unstoppable earlier in the season.

Sleepers:

Some lower seeds that are going to make some noise

1) Dayton- There is something about this # 11 seed being matched up against an in-state opponent from a major conference that I like.  If Dayton can get past the big bad Buckeyes their next few games don’t look very overwhelming. Dayton would likely play Syracuse in the next round, who as I just said are already on tilt.  If they get that far, there’s no telling how deep of a run they could make.

2) George Washington- GW Finish the year 24-10 and 11-5 in the A 10. This is a #9 seed, with a good draw, that could get hot. If they get past Memphis in the first round they would probably see Virginia in the next round. I’m just not buying VA as a great #1 seed ,and I’m thinking  GW will sneak past the Cavaliers right into the sweet 16.

3) Kentucky- Kentucky is a talented team, and with an 8 seed the attention isn’t all on them. They might just be enough under the radar to make a solid run. Its a tough bracket, but with Wichita State as the one seed I think Kentucky will at least make it to the sweet 16.

My Final 4:

Florida- South

Iowa State- East

Louisville- Midwest

Wisconsin – West

Florida is the number one overall seed, and I think they at least hold on until the Final Four. Louisville isn’t just winning right now , they are destroying teams. I think Louisville’s dominance and confidence will carry them into the Final Four. Iowa State is a good team with an easier road until the elite 8, where Iowa State  will likely have to take down a tough Michigan State Spartans team, but I think the Cyclones have it in them.  Wisconsin is a tough and tested Big Ten Team. While the Badgers lost a close one to Mich State in their last game they have  beaten the Spartans this year, plus they have had other notable wins over Florida (#1 Seed), Virginia (#1 Seed), and Michigan( #2 Seed).

Enjoy the Games and be as unproductive as possible at work this week!
