The Run Down

There was a whole lot ‘o pitchin’ goin’ on in Toronto on Thursday night.  Miguel Gonzalez and a triumvirate of bullpen arms outgunned Jays’ starter J.A.Happ and reliever Casey Janssen in another classic pitcher’s duel.  It went something like this, with the Birds slapping last….

Toronto shouldn’t have brought a cotton blended glove to an armored-knuckle throw down.

O’s starter Miggy Gonzo got into a few tight spots, but he left Jose Reyes on second after he stole the base in the third, and he got a fly-ball out from Ryan Goins to end the fourth to leave two Jays stranded on second and third.  Miggy’s big mistake came in the fifth when he gave up a dong to Anthony Gose, but after that, no Blue Jay would advance past first base for the remainder of the evening.  Gonzalez shut ’em down in the sixth and the bullpen combo of Miller, O’Day, and Britton would slam the door shut to send the Jays to the showers with a whimper.  In the last four innings of the game the Birds allowed only one base runner (O’Day allowed a walk.).  That’s power, babes.

Meanwhile, when he’s bulldozing thru games and all intense, I swear Gonzalez reminds me of Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in the Godfather….

Don’t mess with Miggy, we all know what happened to Fredo….

Other Game Notes

Oh yeah, the only Orioles’ runs came off the bat of catcher Caleb Joseph, who blasted his seventh home run of the year in the fourth inning with JJ Hardy already on base.  In his last four games, Joseph is 6 for 14 with 7 RBIs.  He has homered in each of those four games.  This kid was known for his power in the minors and that power is now translating to the big leagues in a big way.

Chris Davis batted seventh.  He went 1-4 with a double. He is showing signs….

Nick Markakis also doubled.  Of the O’s five hits, three were doubles and one was a home run.  That’s a nice slugging percentage.
