Jimmy Smith Being Out For The Season Is A Fucking Dagger

Today, it was reported that Jimmy Smith had foot surgery and will be out for the remainder of the season. The injury occurred against the Bengals in Week 8, and the Ravens were hopeful that Smith would only miss a few weeks. But unfortunately, doctors determined that surgery would be the best choice for Smith, and now the Ravens are royally fucked. Smith was having a terrific year, holding opponents to just 20 catches for 163 yards and no touchdowns (Pro Football Focus). Not only was he playing at a Pro Bowl level, but he was by far the best corner on the Ravens’ roster. It’s honestly upsetting to watch Lardarius Webb play football these days. Injuries have taken their toll on Webb to the point that he looks like a shell of himself out there. Asa Jackson was solid earlier this season, but he hurt his toe and isn’t eligible to return until Week 14. Chykie Brown and Dominique Franks were so bad that they were shit-canned earlier this week. Danny Gorrer and Tramain Jacobs were brought in to take their spots, but it’s safe to say that these guys aren’t saviors. I’ve always thought that Gorrer was a better player than people gave him credit for, but at the end of the day, he’s a 28-year-old journeyman who’s been on six teams in five seasons. I admittedly don’t know a damn thing about Jacobs, except that he’s an undrafted rookie. Just fucking great. What’s wrong, Ozzie, Frank Walker didn’t want to make a comeback?

I know that Ozzie is one of the greatest general managers of all-time, and I’ll forever be thankful for the two Super Bowls that he’s brought to this city, but it’s abundantly clear that he dropped the ball when it came to the Ravens’ secondary this season. The Ravens have the 24th worst pass defense in the league, and have given up the 4th most pass plays of 20 or more yards. And that’s with Smith in the lineup for eight of their nine games. Obviously, Ozzie couldn’t have predicted that Smith would suffer a season-ending injury, but that’s no excuse for the bizarrely ineffective way that he’s constructed their secondary. Every time I see Matt Elam line up across from a receiver in the slot, I make this face…

Currently, the Ravens have SEVEN safeties on their roster and only THREE cornerbacks. That’s absolutely mind-blowing to me, especially when Ozzie’s always been a guy who preached that you can never have enough good corners. For whatever reason, the cupboard is bare of any corners worth a damn right now, and there’s a good chance that it costs the Ravens a playoff berth in a red hot AFC.
