Is AJ The Answer?

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that “it’s really looking like a Baltimore-Philadelphia-Pittsburgh runoff” for the services of A.J. Burnett.

Burnett has decided to pitch in 2014 and is willing to look at clubs other than the Pirates. The Blue Jays and Rays have also shown interest, but it’s looking like a three-team race for the right-hander. Burnett has loyalty to the Pirates, but he lives just outside of Baltimore and Peter Gammons reported earlier this week that the Orioles are “all in” on the righty.

A.J. Burnett has quickly jumped to the top of the list of candidates that the Orioles could potentially add to their starting rotation before Spring Training begins. Hell, even before Burnett announced he would be returning for another season, Dan Duquette made it clear that the Birds were very interested in acquiring the veteran right-handed pitcher.

A.J. turned in a solid year last year, posting an ERA of 3.30 (that was in the NL, take it for what your want)  and pitching almost 200 innings. However, at 37 you have to wonder if he’s got another good year up his sleeve. Prior to a pair of good seasons in Pittsburgh, Burnett was a train wreck in New York. Headcase, I believe, is what the Bronx faithful called him. I know you can’t judge a player by one game, but when I hear we’re “all in” on AJ Burnett, all I can think about is him getting lit up like a Christmas tree in the playoffs last year. It was so brutal watching him give up 7 earned runs in just 2 innings in that post season mess that the Pirates actually skipped his next start.

Is AJ the answer? I guess it depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for someone to eat innings, go .500, hopefully stay healthy, and shit the bed in a big game then AJ is your guy. If you’re looking for an Ace, or even someone who can help you out for more than 1 season, keep shopping.

  1. Burnett fucking blows. I’d rather find out what Daniel Cabrera is doing these days than sign Headcase
