I Don’t Want To Jinx Him, But Damn, Kevin Gausman Is Tearing The Majors Up Right Now.

Boom.  Kevin Gausman turned in a gem this afternoon to run his record to 3-1.  Gausman pitched six shutout innings, all the while striking out five Tampa Bay Rays and walking only one.  The Birds would only score two runs, but it was more than enough for the shut-out trio of Gausman, Tommy Hunter , and Zach Britton. (Hunter went six up- six down over two frames. You can have your mini-stroke now.)

Since Gauman’s last call-up, the young right-handed fireballer is 3-0 with a 0.94 ERA.  He’s pitched nineteen innings since his call up and he’s struck out fourteen batters.  His fastball is consistently in the upper nineties and he pounds the corners like Joey Chesnut pounds hot-dogs every July 4th weekend.

Gausman has also shown a lot of poise for a guy that looks like he’s barely old enough to drive.  The Baby-Faced Gasman loaded the bases in the first inning today thanks to a single, an error, and a strike zone that seemed to shrink like Beetlejuice’s head as the inning wore on.  No big deal, Gausman struck out two and then got David Dejesus to fly out to end the inning.  No harm done, babes.  Gausman doesn’t panic with runners on, he simply keeps trusting his stuff and throwing strikes.

I hate to jinx the kid or put any more pressure on him, but damn, Kevin Gausman looks like the real fucking deal.  We haven’t had a true ace since Mike Mussina left for pinstripes and hell, some folks didn’t even consider him a big A.  Gausman will surely hit some rough patches this year, but right now the kid from LSU is tearing Major League Baseball Up.  Let’s hope he keeps coming up spades, because we sure could use one of these…..

Meanwhile, Nelson Cruz is good at baseball.  Was there ever a doubt about this one today?  Cruz now has 22 HRs and 58 RBIs on the year.

Professional hitter Steve Pearce had the other Oriole RBI today.  I think the Pearce/Cruz, left-field/DH platoon is working its way to official status.

After a day much deserved day off, the Birds travel to the Bronx for three against the hated Yankees.   Mark Teixeira is such a douche.
