Hi Ho Pimlico! Old Hilltop Opens Thursday

Featured, Sports and Bets — April 3, 2013 at 8:26 pm by

The “Other Opening Day” is Thursday as Pimlico opens their Spring Meet.  This is one of my favorite days of the spring and the fact that it goes backMaryland Governor Makes Appeal For Slot Machines to back with the Orioles’ home opener is just an added bonus.  Pimlico is a dump, but it sure is fun.  I mean nothing says “degenerate gambler” like loving a track that’s falling down in the middle of the ghetto, but if that’s the case, so be it.  This “dump” is actually a place filled with important sports history so quit being afraid of the city and get your ass down there.  The Pimlico  meet runs longer this year and the quality of racing should be better than in recent memory due to the influx of slot money and the new 10 year contract signed by the tracks and the local horsemen.  Money and peace make for better times ahead for Maryland Horseracing, hopefully that will eventually translate into updated facilities and bigger crowds, but all that remains to be seen.

Anyway, Opening Day is always crowded and the track hooks it up with free admission and $2 draft beers all day long.  (Sure beats the $8 they’ll whack you for at Camden Yards Friday.)  They also have $2 Pizza and Hot Dogs and it looks like they are branching out food-wise with a new Finish Line Smokehouse BBQ  and a Gyro Hut too.  Before chuckling please realize that the food at Pimlico is good;  believe it or not they have one of the best crab cakes on the planet.  For more info on all the specials click here: http://www.pimlico.com/events/2013-04-04/opening-day-pimlico

So tonight call out of work again for tomorrow and then go to your local Royal Farms and buy a Daily Racing Form.  If your area Royal Farms doesn’t have one, or you don’t have a car, just go online to www.drf.com and buy the past performances for Pimlico.  Now you’ll be ready for tomorrow’s action and you can follow along with my picks.

Last week was brutal.  My confidence had been high after the Rebel day and my trip to Gulfstream, but this game has a way of keeping you humble.  So now we tackle the home track at one of my favorite places on this earth.  Let’s go get ’em.

Race 1: ( 5k Claim) The #2 Western Tease is obvious.  Use him in exactas and the double for value.

Race 2: (40k MSW) #2 Daddy’s Moment.  Throw out his last run in the slop.  Nice connections and decent recent works suggest all systems go.  Win bet along with exacta with the 3 Everything Matters.

Race 3: (Starter ALW) #5 Pluracity.  Hoping for a speed dual up front amongst the favorites.  Barn does well with 1st time claims.  5-1 Morning line adds to the appeal.

Race 4: (42000 ALW)  It’s chalky with the #3 Lady Repent.  But she looks the best.  I may get crazy and play the 6 Marataya’s Tune on a hunch play.

Race 5: (7500 CLM)  Love the #3 Seattle Prospect.  Barn sick off first claims, and bullet work makes me happy.  Hammer and I hope I get 4-1.

Race 6 (OC 25K ) #6 Mikey Likes It can lay off the pace while the 1,1a,3 and 4 all go bonkers trying to get to the front. Win bet and exactas with 1 and 4.

Race 7 (Starter ALW)  #4 Sun Dance Moon.  Throw out the last on the wet track, this horse looks ready.  4 wins at the distance, bullet work and a patient running style all suit our money just fine here.  Love this play.  Win and exactas with 1 and 5.

Race 8 (OC 25k)  #2 Merryland Moon.  Like the name.  Do I have to justify every pick?

Race 9 (5k CLM) #2 Lookin For Me.  In decent form coming off 2nd career win.  At 12-1 I’m willing to take a chance in this ugly closer.

Enjoy the track babes.  Good luck!
