Gonzo Is The Man In Birds’ 7-3 Win

Miggy Gonzo went 6 2/3 innings, allowed 3 earned runs, and registered 9 strikeouts in Baltimore’s 7-3 win over Cleveland last night.  Bingo.  The win gave the Birds a much-needed split against the Indians.  Losing three out of four to the Tribe would have felt like something of a disaster, mostly because the Red Sox just keep winning. (Bobby Valentine must really have been horrific last season for them to have lost 93 games.)  It’s amazing the kind of lift good pitching can give to a ball club.

The offense wasn’t too shabby for the O’s last night either.  Trailing 3-2 in the fifth after Cleveland’s Mike Aviles homered in the top of the inning, the Birds exploded for 5 runs in their portion of the frame.  This lineup is extremely dangerous and these run explosions have been pretty typical.  It’s a hell of a good time watching it, especially when the key hit is delivered by  a guy who’s been struggling like Matt Wieters.  (How he struggles, I have no idea, his left-handed swing is pretty damn smooth.)

You were safe, but you are now out babes.

Ryan Flaherty is suddenly the man.  He went 2-3 with a run and two RBIs.  The RBIs came in the second on a well placed ground ball single to right.  It was a nice piece of hitting, especially since there were two outs.  He is now batting .208.  Up significantly from .171, which is what he was batting just a few weeks ago.

Adam Jones was out on a bizarre play in the fifth.  As he slid into second in an attempt to break up a double play, the fielder was pulled off the bag as he tried to catch and throw over Jones.  Jones was called safe, but thought he was called put.  Jones simply left the field.  Can’t do that babes, now you’re really out.  It was a massive Oriole brain fart, luckily it didn’t cost them later.

Be the way Mr. Umpire, you still fucking suck!

Manny got ejected by the home plate umpire, who was the first base umpire the night before who botched Manny’s slide into first call.  Last night he called Manny out on strikes despite the fact that Manny claimed to have fouled off the ball.  Small argument.  Gone.  Buck came out and yelled a little more, but nothing crazy went down.  With the Umps being as bad as they’ve been lately I wouldn’t have blamed Ol’ Buck if he’d have lost his mind again.

The Yankees are in town tonight for a weekend series, take back the Yard!  (Just keep it civil for shit’s sake.)

Phelps (5-4) vs McFarland (1-0)  (Bet the over)

Would have liked to have seen Gausman again in this spot.

Let’s Go O’s!
