G.B.H. (Gonzo, Britton, and Hunter, Not The Old Punk Band) Shut Out Rays, Birds Get Mini-Sweep

The Run Down:

Miguel Gonzalez and Zach Britton battled the Tampa Bay Rays to record eight shutout innings and Tommy Hunter slammed the door shut in the ninth, to get our beloved Birds back to the .500 mark.  It was also the first time this year that the Orioles won a home series, as they swept the division rival Rays in a two game, rain shortened home set.

Gonzo went five innings and Zach Britton went a season high three innings, running his scoreless inning streak to 11 1/3.  It was solid stuff from Gonzalez, even though he allowed a base runner in each of his five innings, and even though he struggled with command at times and walked three.  Shutout ball is shutout ball, and at the end of the day it doesn’t matter whether Gonzo got out of jams with timely strikeouts and ground balls, or with stellar defense from his outfield, like he got from right fielder Nick Markakis on a diving catch and double-up of a runner at second base in the fourth inning.

Markakis also notched two hits to complete his fine day at the office.

The Birds got just what they needed from Chen and Gonzo in this series to the tune of 11 solid innings.

Other Game Notes:

Tommy Hunter recorded a four out save, his fourth of the year.  This guy can throw some serious heat.

Adam Jones had two hits and an RBI.

The Rays left nine runners on base, the O’s left seven.

Love the Jackie Robinson Tribute unis….

Next Up For The Birds:

After having Thursday off, the O’s travel to Boston for a big, early season four game series. ( The Birds will have the honor of playing in the Patriot’s Day game on Monday.)

Friday night it’s the ace, Chris Tillman (1-1) vs TBA

It would be awesome to take it to the Sox in this series….

Let’s Go O’s!

……and if you’ve never heard G.B.H. the punk band, well here you go.
