Dickey’s Knuckler Beaten By O’s

A beaten Dickey

I know it’s stupid and immature to make fun of R.A Dickey’s last name in the headline, but how could I resist.  It’s just too easy.  Especially when the Birds beat last year’s National League Cy Young winner last night here at the Yard.  Dickey really had only one bad inning, the 2nd, but the Orioles got to him for 4 runs in that 2nd and that was enough for the Birds to hang on 4-3.  Dickey got out pitched by our boy, Miguel Gonzalez.  Gonzo allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, and gave the Orioles six quality innings.  He too only had one bad inning, the sixth, but he allowed only three runs, thereby leaving with the lead intact. It was the second quality start in as many nights by the starting staff.

Despite Gonzo’s quality start, the Orioles are the only team in baseball to not have a starter go 7 innings or more.  This needs to improve for the sake of the bullpen.  Speaking of the bullpen, the Orioles have now won 1oo straight games that they have led past the 7th inning.  This is the second longest streak in Major League history.  It’s an incredible stat, and it shows how good our bullpen has been.  Last night is another perfect example.  Matusz, Strop and Johnson allowed no runs on one hit (though they did walk two batters) to close out the game.  Make no mistake Oriole fans, without this bullpen, the Orioles would not be contenders.

Manny had 2 RBI’s.  Wieters had a much needed hit and RBI as well.
