Crush Crushes 50 as O’s Stay In Hunt

After a ridiculously pathetic series against the Yankees, the Birds needed a win badly. They got just that tonight as they willed their way past the Blue Jays 5-3.  Crush Davis blasted his 50th home run of the year to tie Brady Anderson for the Oriole single season team record.  The home run also broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning, so it was clutch as well as historic.  Speaking of history, with that home run Chris Davis became only the third player in Major League history to hit 50 home runs and 40 doubles in the same season.  The other two were Albert Belle and Babe Ruth.  That’s kind of a big deal.

I’ll kill you!

Meanwhile, Jason Hammel came back and delivered his usual five innings of decent, yet not awe-inspiring, baseball. I’m not killing the guy here, but I expected a lot more from him this year.  Anyway, he kept the Birds in it, and with the exception of  T.J McFarland, the bullpen pitched well.  (I can’t really figure out the team’s fascination with T.J.) The bullpen needed a nice outing after the Yankee debacles during the week.  (That Jim Johnson shit Thursday night made me too angry to even write.)  This bullpen can’t blow another lead for the rest of the year, that’s the bottom line.  Bitter stat of the day:  Jim Johnson has 8 losses this year.  Cut that in half and the O’s are in the Wild Card.

50 Babes

But enough bitter talk.  Chris Davis is having an incredible damn year and the Birds aren’t out of this thing yet.  It seems unfathomable to think that a team that has played .500 baseball for 3 months could still be in a playoff  race, but here we are.  With 15 games left the Birds are  2.5  games out of the post season.  It’s doable, but let’s be real here.  The Birds need to go 11-4 to make it happen, and they’ll need a little help from the teams around them.  It’s beyond crunch time, but maybe the offense will start clicking, maybe the starters will remain solid, and maybe, just maybe, the bullpen will have the best two weeks of their season.

BTW, Jones and Machado both made Top Plays on Sportscenter for their sick defense.  Jones on his assist to third and Machado on two plays that he makes look routine.

The miracle starts tomorrow

Tillman (16-5) vs Rogers (5-7)

Let’s Go O’s!
