The Run Down

After giving up 16 total runs and dropping the first two games of the series, the Birds (42-36) bounced back with a 4-2 win over the Rangers (40-39). The O’s needed Wei-Yin Chen to be the stopper tonight, and the crafty southpaw did not disappoint. Chen picked up his 4th win of the season after holding Texas to two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over eight innings. It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the hometown team, though. Shin-Soo Choo hit a solo homer in the 3rd inning and Ryan Rua hit one of his own in the 4th to give Texas a 2-0 lead. At this point, it looked like the O’s would be in for another long night at the ballpark, but Chen was able to settle in and the Oriole hitters were able to solve Nick Martinez. Jimmy Paredes cut Texas’ lead in half in the bottom of the 4th on a solo homer to right-center.

In the bottom of the 6th, Ryan Flaherty lead off the inning with a double. He advanced to 3rd on an error from Adrian Beltre on a Manny Machado ground ball, and he came around to score on an RBI fielder’s choice from Paredes. With one out in the bottom of the 7th and Chris Davis on 1st in a 2-2 game, J.J. Hardy delivered in a major way. The clutch shortstop hammered a two-run homer to left to give the Birds a 4-2 lead that they would never relinquish. Chen and Zach Britton retired the next six Rangers in order, and the O’s were back in the win column!

Other Game Notes

After giving up the home run to Rua in the 4th, Chen retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced.

Martinez’s final line: L, 6.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Choo has homered in all three of the games this series.

Paredes went 2-for-4 with a HR, a run scored, and two RBIs. He’s now hitting .319/.347/.520 on the season.

Machado went 0-for-4 to end his 12-game hitting streak, but he more than made up for it with three top-notch plays in the field.

Davis went 1-for-4 with a run scored, and he’s now quietly working on an 11-game hitting streak.

Britton struck out the side while recording his 23rd save. If that guy doesn’t make the All-Star team, Ned Yost needs his fucking head examined.
