Yesterday, June 30, the Terps began their two-day celebration of their move into the Big Ten.  As of today, July 1, the University of Maryland is officially no longer in the ACC, the Terps are now in the B1G. The festivities began yesterday at at the Under Armour Brand House in Baltimore, where Terps’ staff and coaches, as well as the Big Ten commissioner, Jim Delany, and Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson, were all part of the unveiling of the new Maryland/Big Ten inaugural apparel. Later in the day at Nationals Park, the University and the Big Ten Network held a block party prior to the Nat’s baseball game.

Now that the move has been made official, today on campus on Mitchell Field (for those familiar with the campus it is the field near the M Circle) there will be a Big Ten celebration. This will include giveaways and games, as well as the Spirit Squad, Testudo, and the Mighty Sound of Maryland.

The end of the ACC era has come. (The ACC is a conference that the University of Maryland helped establish in 1953.) But with the closing of this chapter is the beginning of a new one in the Big Ten, with new excitement, new rivals, and new history to write. The first few years may be rough for the football and men’s basketball programs, but within a few years the Terps should be able to blend right in with the rest of the conference. I think the Terps have a promising future in their new conference.
