“Catastrophic Anomaly”- Watching A Rocket Explode

News — October 28, 2014 at 9:14 pm by

I have never seen a rocket launch before, so I wanted to make sure that I caught the Antares rocket launch from Wallops Island, Virginia.  Beings that I’m on the Eastern Shore, a trip to the Ocean City Inlet was in order. I arrived, family in tow, with T-minus 9 minutes to spare.

All I saw from O.C was a big burst of flame in the southern sky.  That was ignition. Then the ball of flame got way fucking big- that was the rocket exploding.  It was pretty damn crazy watching from 45 miles away. (And crazy to hear the explosion almost four minutes later)

Even crazier closer. (Michael Waller Instagram/ YouTube/Storyful)

Good thing that nobody was hurt.  But that’s a lot of money, time, and research literally going up in smoke.
