MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that the Padres would likely want a prospect in return also.
Melvin Upton, Jr. would be a nice add if the Orioles could get him. He’s currently hitting .259 with 16 home runs and 20 stolen bases, and he could make a great replacement for Joey Rickard and/or Hyun Soo Kim, who both recently landed on the DL. And the Orioles would be giving up someone that should have been DFA’d a long time ago.
I’m not sure exactly why the Padres would want Jimenez, but Upton’s salary is a few million per year more than his, so it seems like the Padres are just trying to get rid of Upton’s salary.
The tough part about this is the prospect they would seek in return. If it was a high price, the trade wouldn’t be worth it. Upton’s not a season changing type of guy, despite being a nice piece to add. Roch Kubatko is reporting it could be Tanner Scott the Padres are interested in. Lefty reliever who throws 101 and strikes out a ton of batters. Not sure how I’d feel about that. Hopefully the O’s can convince the Padres to agree to a lesser prospect.
