Britton Beats Verlander? You’re Damn Right

I love being wrong sometimes.  Yesterday I whined and complained about Zach Britton being sent out as a sacrificial lamb, a doomed minor leaguer who didn’t stand a chance against one of the game’s best pitchers, Justin Verlander.  I mean, what was to like about the matchup?  Britton’s career resembles a yo-yo, constantly up and down from the majors to the minors after being unable to produce on the big stage.   Verlander, on the other hand, is a Cy Young winner and a true stopper.  To make matters worse, he’s never lost to the Orioles.  But as Ray-Ray said after the Denver playoff game, “But you still gotta play the game Sal…”

Birds finally beat Verlander

And play the game they did.  Verlander was gone after 5 innings.  He allowed 5 earned runs off 7 hits, including two home runs from Adam Jones and JJ Hardy.  Zach Britton on the other hand pitched pretty well, allowing only 1 run and 5 hits.  He only pitched 5 1/3 innings, but considering he was going against one of the best lineups in baseball after a quick call up from the minors, those 5 1/3 innings were big innings for the Orioles.  It will be interesting to see if he stays up in the show, I, for one, think he’s at least earned another start.

The Orioles’ 5-2 win marked the first time they had ever beaten Verlander.  Ever.

Manny Machado recorded his 100th hit of the season last night.  It was a double.

Simply put, Adam Jones is the fucking man.

Adam Jones and JJ Hardy both homered last night.  Jones has been a rock at the clean up spot this year, and Hardy’s  improvement at the plate since late April has been staggering.

Going back to the All-Star break last year, Chris Davis has had exactly 500 at bats.  Over that time frame he has hit 42 home runs and knocked in 105.
