Birds Walk Angels To Win, Still Get Series

The Run Down

Is there anything more frustrating than watching a bullpen walk away a ballgame?  It’s the baseball equivalent of death by paper cuts and it’s exactly what the O’s did last night against the Angels.  After six strong innings from O’s starter Chris Tillman, who allowed just one run on five hits, the Birds held a precarious one run lead.  Enter Tommy Hunter.  Tommy would walk Mike Trout in the seventh, but would get Albert Pujols to ground into a double play.  In the eighth, Hunter wouldn’t escape his walks.  Granted, the strike zone did seem to get a little tighter in the later innings and granted, one of the walks issued in the eighth was intentional, but c’mon.  The Birds were in a position to sweep, they need to make the Angels earn themselves a win.  Hunter, with two on and two out in the gruesome eighth, would issue four balls to Chris Iannetta and walk the bases loaded.  Enter Brian Matusz.  One batter, one walk, one run, lead evaporates.  An eleven year old kid could have stood in the batters box in that situation against Matusz and won the game for the Angels last night because Brian Matusz couldn’t throw strikes.  Ugly.

But on the bright side, the Birds did travel out to Anaheim/L.A./So Cal/California and take a series from the Angels. And it’s good to see Chris Tillman’s ERA under 4.00 again (3.92).

I’ll also be real happy when the O’s return home, these west coast road trip are hard on players and fans alike.

Other Game Notes

Adam Jones went 1-4 and logged his 64th RBI.

David Lough went 2-4 with a stolen base in a rare start.  Lough leads the team with six stolen bases, which is probably pathetic, but this is a team that believes in the Earl Weaver.

Manny Machado sat out again with lower back tightness.  He took an injection to help with the inflammation, but the word on the street is that he’ll miss tonight’s game as well.

Chris Davis went 1-3 with a walk.

The O’s are now three games up on the Yanks and Jays.

Next Up For the O’s

Tonight, the Birds invade Seattle

Chen (10-3)  vs Iwakuma (8-4)

let’s Go O’s!
