Birds Lose Series Finale 6-4. All Good, Babes, O’s Still Took 3 Out Of 4 From Twinkies

The Run Down

Kevin Gausman pitched pretty well today despite giving up four earned runs.  He struck out seven and he gave the O’s 7.1 innings.  But he was outdueled by Twins’ starter Phil Hughes, who went eight strong and allowed only three runs.  Gausman was roughed up in the sixth for three earned, but he came back strong in the seventh to bag three outs in three batters.  But when the Gas-man came out in the eighth, a walk and an error at third by Jimmy Paredes (Manny’s knee problems suck.) spelled his doom.  Buck yanked the young fireballer with two men on and asked reliever Andrew Miller to save the sinking ship, but unfortunately Miller put forth his only truely shitty performance as an Oriole. Miller allowed the inherited runners to score and then allowed an unearned run of his own.  As well as he’s been pitching, we can give him a pas, at least for now.

On the offensive side of things the O’s just couldn’t get enough done. Hughes pitched well for the Twins and the Birds couldn’t get to him until the seventh.  Nick Hundley blasted an Earl Weaver to tie the game in that frame, but the O’s were never able to take the lead.  A sweep felt in order with a tie game in the seventh and a sick bullpen in Buck’s back pocket, after all the Birds have been winning these kinds of games all year, but that feeling quickly dissipated with the Baltimore pitching meltdown in the eighth.

All good though, the O’s took three out of four from the struggling Twins.  I’ll take that all September and October long…..

Other Game Notes

Nelson Cruz hit his Major League leading 36th home run in the ninth inning.  This guy has been so sick all year.

Don’t look now, but Chris Davis went 2-4.  Over the four game series, Davis was 4-11 with a home run, five RBIs, and four walks.  That’s production, babes.  Oh wouldn’t it be great if Crush could get going…..

The Orioles have an 8.5 game lead in the A.L. East with 26 games left to play.  The magic number is 19. (The O’s still have to play the second place Yankees eight more times.)
