Birds Lose Butt-Clincher To Angels, Still Take Series

The Run Down

Even though the Birds lost last night nigh, that was a hell of a ballgame.  Last night was the type of game that Buck’s Birds usually win, but it wasn’t meant to be last night as the O’s dropped a 1-0, thirteen inning squeaker to the California/Anaheim/L.A. Angels.  Bud Norris, Brad Brach, Tommy Hunter and Ryan Webb pitched eleven shut out innings, but then Webb couldn’t get an out in the twelfth and he would allow the only run of the ballgame on a walk and two singles.  Brian Matusz, obviously alarmed by Dan Duquette trading for more left-handed bullpen help yesterday, mopped up Webb’s mess by taking care of all three batters he faced and striking out two of them.

It was a tough loss, but the O’s still took the series from the Angels and finish the year 4-2 against one of the best team in the American League.  The Birds were 17-8 in July, which adds up to a 68% winning percentage.  If they can keep that torrid pace up, the Birds would end up with 97 wins on the year.  Wouldn’t that be nice, babes?

Last night’s loss aside, 68% baseball wouldn’t be out of the question if the O’s can keep pitching and playing defense like they have been.

Meanwhile, The Chode and his Wild Bill T-Shirt were representing the Wire last night.

Other Game Notes

The Orioles had five hits and Caleb Joseph had two of them.

Chris Davis stopped shitting and puking enough to pinch hit for Delmon Young in the ninth. He struck out.  Davis would later walk in extra innings.  He is now batting .198, which makes me want to shit and puke.

Bud Norris went seven full innings and allowed no runs.  His ERA is now 3.69.

The Orioles are slumping at the plate as a team but Nelson Cruz is in a particularly long funk.  Cruz is 0 for his last 17 and is now batting .264.

With last night’s loss and Toronto’s win the O’s are just 1.5 games in first.
