Birds Bash Their Way Past The Florida Fishies

The Run Down

The weather is warming and so seem to be our beloved Birds.  The Orioles took game one of their three game series with the Florida Marlins this evening, 8-5.  It was an entertaining affair to watch for Birds fans as the Baltimore bats surged the O’s to the win; and don’t look now Baltimore faithful, but the O’s have suddenly won three of their last four.

It didn’t start all roses and baseball beauty though down in Florida.  The O’s trailed 3-0 early and hits were hard to come by in the first four frames.  But the Orioles got to Henderson Alvarez in the fifth on with a Delmon Young pinch hit RBI double and a Manny Machado RBI on a ground ball out.  In the sixth, Alvarez folded like a cheap chair, walking two and then airmailing a ball into left field after JJ Hardy’s sac bunt.  Alvarez would then intentionally walk Alejandro De Aza and give way to reliever, Steve Cishek.  Cishek would promptly take his thumping when Caleb Joseph ripped a two-RBI single to center.  Jimmy Paredes would add the final run of the inning on an infield single.  The four run frame would put the O’s in the driver’s seat to stay.

In the meantime, the O’s would again have to parade out a group of pitchers to get the job done. Ubaldo started, but he didn’t have his best stuff and Buck had zero issue pinch hitting for him in the fifth.  That worked out well, as that pinch hitter was the aforementioned Delmon Young.  Enter the youngster, Tyler Wilson, who let up a run in an inning of work.  Wilson also executed a perfect sac bunt in the O’s four run sixth. and he got a fine team reaction for his dish effort (It was National League baseball hell out there tonight with all this goddamned bunting.)

Tommy Hunter held the game down by pitching two scoreless.  Wilson go the win, his first Major League win ever, but Hunter was the MVP of the pen tonight. Brad Brach and Zach Britton would finish the game off.  Brach allowed a run and Britton entered to record a one out save when Brach got into a bit of a mess in the ninth.  No worries, as Zach got the job done by gunning down the final out at first on an infield dribbler.  It would be nice, and it would do the bullpen wonders to see Mike Wright  eat some innings tomorrow.

Other Game Notes

Jimmy Paredes went 3 for 5.  He played second base tonight and he’ll be there tomorrow because taking him out of the lineup right now is impossible.

Caleb Joseph went 3 for 4 with a walk and two RBIs.

Manny Machado had three RBIs on two hits, one of which was a two run double in the ninth.

I had no idea Ichiro played for the Marlins.  None.   He went 2 for 4and is batting .292.

ich

Travis Snider went 0-fer with two walks.  I’d like to see this guy get more at-bats.  He works counts and I think the steady time would do him some good.

Next Up For The O’s
