Bird Turds. O’s Get Death By Paper Cuts From KC. Davis Hurt In 5-0 Loss.

The Run Down

The O’s returned home after winning an away series at Toronto that had seen them score 21 runs in their last two ballgames.  The Baltimore offense was smoking.  That is until they ran into the young Kansas City starter, Yordano Ventura, who was throwing flames out of  his right hand for eight innings last night at The Yard.  Ventura struck out eight Birds and scattered seven hits over those eight shutout innings to notch the win.  It felt even more dominant than that, especially considering how hot the Oriole bats had been.  It sucked that the Birds lost, but if you like pitching like I do, it was interesting to watch this kid hurl gas.

Meanwhile, O’s starter Ubaldo Jimenez went 6 and change and allowed four earned.  Jimenez allowed six singles and walked four batters.  The Royals took advantage by small balling the O’s free agent prize to death.  Single, walk, single, a stolen base, another single;  suddenly there were four runs on the board and Jimenez was avoiding lemons and other citrus for fear of stinging all of his Royal afflicted paper cuts.  I still think Jimenez will right himself, but his 0-4 record and his 6.59 ERA have a distinct and ugly Jake Arrieta feel to them.

To make matters worse Chris Davis left the game in the fifth with a strained left oblique muscle.  Oblique injuries in baseball are not good.  He’s listed as day-to-day, but these things usually end up as 15 Day DL injuries.  Your guess is as good as mine as to who will man first if that happens. The injury bug continues for the Birds. Just as he was starting to warm up too….

Speaking of injuries, Manny Machado went 3-4 in his first rehab game down in Frederick.  He hit two doubles and a triple.  He’s pretty good at baseball.

Other Game Notes

Markakis, Wieters, and Hardy all had two hits.  Flaherty had one, and was the only other Oriole to reach base.

The Birds left 9 runners on base and were 0-5 with runners in scoring position.

Billy Butler had the only extra base hit for KC.  He had an RBI double in the 9th.

T.J. McFarland pitched three solid innings for the Birds in relief of Jimenez.  He has to have a complex since he only appears when the O’s are losing or in garbage time.  Remember that old show Roc about the garbage man?  I say that Roc should be T.J.’s new nickname.

Next Up For The Birds
