Round 2(really round 1) can be tricky to the casual bettor.  Conventional thinking is take the chalk, as in laying the points with the favorites, but I’m loving quite a few dogs on Thursday and Friday.

To start things off,  I’ll take the six points Ohio St is laying to Dayton, as I like Dayton outright over the Buckeyes.  Ohio St has been in countless tough games recently and they have made some huge comebacks in those games, but I see them being too worn down to make a run in the tourney.  Aaron Craft is great, but not great enough to put the team on his back.

I also like Wisconsin-Milwaukee to hang in there against Villanova.  The spread now sits at 16.5 points, and Nova is not exactly playing inspired ball after being bounced by Seton Hall in the conference tourney.  Wisc-Mil ultimately won’t be able to match Nova’s physicality, but they will hang in there long enough to make it interesting.

On Friday, I’m rolling with the Ragin’ Cajuns of UL Lafayette against Doug Mcdermott and the boys of Creighton.  Fourteen points is way too high of a spread for a feisty UL team.  Creighton is talented, well coached, and tourney tested, but they are not 14 points better than the Ragin’ Cajuns.

Seabass

These games are freakin’ brutal.  The NCAA has put together some great first round matchups and there are good teams a-plenty with lower seeds looking to put on that glass slipper and play Cinderella as the tournament wears on.  So, place your bets, ditch work, and drown yourself in beer, basketball, and fried food.  It doesn’t get better than the opening week of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.

I have taken my favorite picks from each bracket.  As The Chode says, take them for what they’re worth, and  free fucking advice usually isn’t worth much, babes.

South Region:  #12 Stephen F. Austin (+6.5) vs #5 VCU-  I know, the 12 beating the 5 angle is played out.  But I love the way Stephen F. Austin plays pressure D on the ball, and I like the way they grind on offense  The fact that they don’t have a player over 6’6″  may not be a big deal since VCU isn’t huge.  SFA is also undefeated in conference play as well, they love to win, and they are a dog that can win here.  Take those free points.

Midwest Region:  #4 Louisville (-16) vs #13 Manhattan-  Manhattan is a nice team, but their season is going to end when they get absolutely destroyed by a red-hot Louisville squad.  Just lay the points, Rick Pitino will have his guys primed.

East Region: #5 Cincinnati (-3) vs #12 Harvard-  Here we go again, you say.  But it’s not what you think.  Everyone and their mother is picking Harvard in this game.  No way, Sean Kilpatrick and his 20.7 ppg won’t let that happen.  Cincy is battle tested and they play tough, tough defense.  Harvard won’t score 60.  I’m laying the 3 here and taking Cincy to advance.

West Region:  #9 Oklahoma State (-3) vs #8 Gonzaga-  Oklahoma State can beat anybody in this bracket, including Arizona, who they would face in the next round if they beat Gonzaga.   They’ve got big talent, Marcus Smart, fan shoving aside, is a beast, and if they can get their shit together, they can make a nice run.  I think they handle Gonzaga here, I’ll lay the 3.
