Another Night, Another Vomit Inducing Terps Loss. Cuse Beats Terps 57-55.

I can’t stand it.  The Terps have gone toe to toe with the best in the ACC the last 10 days and come up frustratingly empty.  First, it was a Big Chuck rim roll the wrong way versus Duke and tonight it was a sloppy lay-up attempt by Nick Faust (fouled?) and a missed desperation 3 off the iron by sharp shooter Seth Allen that kept the Terps from a victory versus Syracuse.  (At least the Terps beat up on Wake in between these two defeats for a nice win.) If one of the two missed shots would have fallen tonight it would have put the cherry on top of a tremendous Maryland comeback. With 6 minutes remaining the Terps  trailed by 12.  But bolstered by their defense and sparked by two big 3’s from Jake Layman and Seth Allen, Maryland cut it to one when Jake Layman hit 1 of 2 free throws with 0:48 on the clock.  C.J. Fair then missed a jumper for Cuse.  But the Terps made an aggressive move in transition off of the Fair miss, and Nick Faust took a Dez Wells pass straight to the rack.  It didn’t go well.  His rushed lay-up was blocked by Baye Moussa Keita.  Faust hit the deck and may have been fouled, but it was a call that could have gone either way.  Besides, Maryland attempted 27 foul shots compared to just 6 by Syracuse, so I’ll just shut up about the refs.  Plus in that situation, I thought the Terps could have looked for a better shot. Maryland had another opportunity to win as time expired but the desperation 3 from Allen clanged off the backboard and the rim.

Damn.

Yeah, it was sickening, but on the glass half full side of things, at least the Terps have played better basketball of late.  Their defense has been stellar and Seth Allen and Dez Wells have played exceptionally well.  Especially Wells, who had 15 again tonight and carried the Terps through a tough start to the second half.  Allen was on fire tonight, leading the Terps with 22 points and hitting six three-pointers.  Allen has steadied the point guard position and given some stability to the Maryland offense.

Tough Terp D…..

But unfortunately the other Terps weren’t much help scoring the basketball.  Layman, despite his late clutch 3, only had 6 points.  Faust didn’t hit a field goal, and Evan Smotrycz had foul problems and 3 points.  Big Chuck had a thunderous dunk early, but that was it for him on offense.  You can’t usually beat quality teams without a third scorer, especially a team as defensively tough as Syracuse.

Other points:

Syracuse does play some nasty defense.  That 2-3 attacking zone is silly.

Games like this fucking piss me off more because the Terps are leaving the ACC.  There is no next year revenge game.

I feel like the Terps are going to do some damage in the ACC tournament.  They just need to learn how to finish these good teams. Maybe, babes, maybe.

Stay positive Terps’ fans, this team is only going to get better and deeper next season.
