The Run Down

Coming into tonight’s game with the Orioles, Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez had a twenty-two inning scoreless streak working.  Professional Hitter Steve Pearce and his home run waved that streak bye-bye in the first inning.  Welcome to The Yard Gio….

The Birds would touch up Gio for three more runs in the third, aided by an Adam Jones RBI double and a Nelson Cruz RBI single.  The third O’s run of the inning was scored on an error by D.C. shortstop Ian Desmond, who inexplicably threw the ball to third base on the Cruz base hit.  The ball went way wide of the bag and didn’t go  where only Desmond knows it was supposed to go.  It was a weird play, Desmond had no chance at an out at third, but I’ll take it.  The unearned run proved to be the game winner, babes.

Wei-Yin Chen got his ninth win of the year tonight after pitching 5.2 innings and giving up the three earned D.C. runs.  Chen was masterful early but got into trouble starting in the fourth.  He ultimately got chased in the sixth, but kept the damage to a minimum.  Chen also notched six K’s, none bigger than the two that ended both the top of the fourth and fifth innings.  In the fourth, Chen struck out Bryce Harper to end the frame and in the fifth he sat down Anthony Rendon to send the T.V. broadcast to commercial.  Bryce didn’t try to break his bat this time….

Other Game Notes

Professional Hitter Steve Pearce was the only Bird with two hits tonight.

Tommy Hunter, Darren O’Day, and Zach Britton slammed the door on the Nats and put up three goose eggs to end the ballgame.  O’Day got himself in and out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth.  Even when he struggles, O’Day is effective.  He may be the most underrated player on this Baltimore team.

Next Up For The O’s

The hated Yankees come to town for the weekend.  Ahem, after talking shit about Nats Park we better fill the Yard with orange and black for the next three days….
